Russian League, Regular Season, Game 13: January 20-21, 2009
Defending champion CSKA Moscow was on the verge of losing its first Russian League game of the 2008/2009 season, but stepped up when it mattered most to edge Moscow rival Dynamo 69-71. CSKA improved its perfect record to 12-0, while Dynamo slipped to 8-4 and now shares third place in the standings with Unics Kazan. BC Khimki is second with 10 victories and 2 defeats. With 10 minutes to go in the Moscow derby, Dynamo was in front at 56-49, but CSKA came back to even the game in the last quarter, and Trajan Langdon's third triple of the night proved to be the game-winner. Langdon led the champs with 18 points and Matjaz Smodis produced 17. Bostjan Nachbar paced Dynamo with 20. In Saint Petersburg, Khimki turned the game around with a 14-29 fourth quarter to beat local Spartak 72-81 as former Spartak playmaker Anton Ponkrashov shined with 16 points and 8 assists for the visitors. In the only Tuesday game, Unics picked up a 70-83 road victory over Spartak-Primorie as Igor Zamanskiy scored 4 of Unics's 9 triples to finish with a game-high 22 points for the guests. Triumph Lyubertsy withstood a last quarter surge by CSK VVS-Samara to prevail 75-68 as J.R. Bremer led four scorers in double figures with 18 points for the winners. Lokomotiv-Rostov beat Universitet-Jugra Surgut 85-75 behind a double-double by Szymon Szewczyk who registered 21 points and 12 rebounds. Konstantin Nesterov led the visitors with 18 points. In Perm, Enisey Kranoyarsk broke through with a 12-21 fourth quarter to steal a 70-72 win over Ural Great as Curtis Millage had 21 points and 6 rebounds and Kaspars Kambala added 16 points and 8 boards for the winners.
With 10 minutes to go in the Moscow derby, Dynamo was in front at 56-49, but CSKA came back to even the game in the last quarter, and Trajan Langdon's third triple of the night helped the champs overtake the lead at 69-71. Neither team was able to score in the remaining 56 seconds and after Bostjan Nachbar missed a desperate long shot at the buzzer, the CSKA players could celebrate that their perfect record had not been spoiled. Langdon led the champs with 18 points, Matjaz Smodis produced 17 points and Ramunas Siskauskas had 15. Nachbar paced Dynamo with 20 points, Robertas Javtokas scored 13 points off the bench and Travis Hansen added 12. Nachbar and Sergey Monya grabbed 8 rebounds apiece to help the hosts win the rebound battle 33-22, but Dynamo went to the line only 8 times, while CSKA earned 25 free throw attempts and converted on 19 of them.
In Saint Petersburg, Khimki turned the game around with a 14-29 fourth quarter to beat local Spartak 72-81 as former Spartak playmaker Anton Ponkrashov shined with 16 points and 8 assists for the visitors. Mike Wilkinson matched Ponkrashov in scoring with 16 points, Vitaly Fridzon added 11 points and Carlos Delfino 10. Point guard Andrew Wisniewski posted 26 points for the hosts.
