Ukrainian League finals, Game 2: May 21, 2009
Azovmash Mariupol got closer to clinch its third consecutive Ukrainian League title by thrashing BC Donetsk 81-64 at home in Game 2 of the best-of-five finals on Thursday. Azovmash has a 2-0 lead in the series but Donetsk hosts Game 3 on Sunday. Serhiy Lishchuk paced the winners with 18 points. Simonas Serapinas and Hasan Rizvic each added 17, Dijon Thompson had 11 while Marius Prekevicius got 10 for Azovmash. Demetrius Alexander led Donetsk with 14 points. Chris Owens added 13 while Milutin Aleksic had 10 for the guests, whose playmaker and scoring leader Andres Rodriguez played in pain due to a leg injury he had in Game 1. Donetsk rallied from an early double-digit deficit to get a 37-39 edge immediately after the break. Prekevicius and Rizvic combined for all points in a game-breaking 13-0 run that put Azovmash ahead for good. Donetsk kept trying but Azovmash managed to seal the outcome midway through the fourth quarter.
Alexander opened the game with a three-pointer but Lishchuk and Rizvic fueled a 10-0 Azovmash run for a 10-3 score. Rizvic stayed unstoppable to make it an 11-point game, 16-5. Owens and Rodriguez stepped up to bring Donetsk back to life, 18-15, after 10 minutes. Owens kept pacing Donetsk and got some help from Alexander and Aleksic to give the guests their first lead, 27-28. Serapinas beat the guests' zone defense with back-to-back three-pointers and soon added free throws for a 35-32 Azovmash lead. Rodriguez and Lishchuk traded baskets to fix the halftime score at 37-34. Alexander followed a power layup with a big triple, but he didn't much help around. Meanwhile, back-to-back triples by Prekevicius ignited a 13-1 run in which Rizvic had 7 points to give Azovmash a 50-40 margin. Zydrunas Urbonas and Alexander brought Donetsk within 58-51 after 30 minutes. Thompson and Prekevicius allowed Azovmash to restore a 13-point lead, 64-51, with 7 minutes to go. Donetsk did not recover, as Azovmash got closer to yet another Ukrainian League title.
