Gmunden lifted its second Austrian Cup trophy in three years by edging Kapfenberg Bulls 68-77 in the title game in Vienna on Sunday. Deteri Mayes paced the winners with 31 points on 5-of-9 three-pointers. Dan Oppland added 12 while Vilius Gabsys and Ian Boylan each had 11 for Gmunden. Mike Schachtner led the Bulls with 15 points. Kevin Nelson and Samuel Knabl each added 12 while Heinz Kugerl had 11 for Kapfenberg. A 0-14 run that Boylan capped with a three-pointer helped Gmunden to get a 14-24 margin after 10 minutes. Gabsys struck three times from downtown to boost his team's margin to 25-40 late in the second quarter. Kapfenberg rallied after the break and 5 unanswered points by Branimir Josipovic gave the Bulls a 58-57 edge with 9 minutes left. Mayes stepped up with 12 points in crunch time, including a big triple that sealed the outcome, 64-73, with 2 minutes left. Gmunden had downed Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions 68-58 in one of the semifinals of Saturday. Mayes led the winners with 23 points, Peter Hutter added 14 and Iam Boylan had 11 for Gmunden. The Bulls topped Oberwart Gunners 79-69 behind 19 points from Knabl.
