Greek Cup, Final, February 20, 2010
Olympiacos Pireaus is the new Greek Cup champion after defeating Panathinaikos 68-64 on Saturday to halt their archrival's five-year streak of lifting the trophy as well as its 24-win streak in the tournament. This is the first title for Olympiacos in eight years and the eighth cup title overall. The Reds threw down some serious defense in the middle quarters, limiting Panathinaikos to just 24 points in 20 minutes, then held on for the victory, their first cup title since 2002. Once again, Olympiacos was led by its youngest player in uniform, 22-year-old point guard Milos Teodosic, who poured in 22 points and and dished 4 assists. Linas Kleiza followed with 12 points and 8 rebounds, as the Reds won the battle of the 40-30, including 17 on the offensive glass. Kleiza also had 4 steals to go with 5 by Theodoros Papaloukas as the Reds doubled Panathinaikos in that category. For the Greens, Nikola Pekovic and Dmitris Diamantidis scored 12 points each, while Mike Batiste had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Drew Nicholas added 10 points. Olympiacos run a 8-0 in the second period and led 35-29. They were six points ahead, 37-31 at the halftime break and soared up to 48-38 as Teodosic hit twice from the arc. The Greens tried to react, but they didn’t have enough energy, so the Reds extended the margin to 63-52 with three minutes to go for the end. Panathinaikos run a 0-7 for 63-59 and also cut the margin to 66-64, but Teodosic scored 2 for 2 free throws to seal the victory of his team and make their fans to start the big celebration.
