Israeli League, Regular Season, Game 3: November 7-9, 2009
Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv remained perfect after the third week of the Israeli League following a big road win over Rishon Lezion. Gilboa/Galil and the newcomer Barak Netanya join Maccabi at the top of the standings with 3-0 records. Maccabi dominated the entire second half en route to 62-89 win at Rishon Lezion. Andrew Wisniewski led Maccabi with 19 points. A brilliant night from Yuval Naimi lifted Hapoel Jerusalem over Hapoel Holon 83-85. Naimi recorded 21 points – including the go-ahead points late in the fourth quarter – and 10 assists to lead Jerusalem.Gilboa/Galil continued to storm the league crushing last season’s runner-up, Maccabi Haifa. Oded Kattash’s men trounced Haifa 101-66 behind 25 points by Jeremy Pargo, while Haifa's teenage prospect, Jeremy Tyler, was ejected late in the game after hitting an opponent. Netanya met another perfect newcomer in Hapoel Afula, but marched off with an 84-79 victory behind 21 points and 9 rebounds by J.R. Pinnock and 20 points and 10 boards by Marco Killingsworth. Ironi Nahariya wrote its first win of the season at home against Ironi Ramat Gan, 80-76, to keep Daniel Gutt's team winless. Sean Daniel and Taj McCullough scored 18 for Ramat Gan. Bnei Hasharon jumped to 2-1 after a heart-pounding 65-63 win over Ironi Ashkelon. Moran Rot of Ashkelon had a chance to win the game before the buzzer, but was blocked by Shawn James, who capped a big night with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Maccabi dominated the entire second half en route to 62-89 win at Rishon Lezion. Andrew Wisniewski led Maccabi with 19 points, Guy Pnini added 15, Doron Perkins 14 and Stephane Lasme finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Larry O'Bannon led Rishon with 23 points. It seemed easy from the start as Maccabi scored the first 11 points of the game and held a 1-15 lead after seven minutes. The locals cut the margin back to a single digit, and several hits from downtown kept them close. Lasme and Raviv Limonad settled the first half score at 35-44 in favor of Maccabi, before the big show began. Wisniewski was the boss of the run as Maccabi's defense stepped up with Pnini excelling on both ends. A three-pointer by Wisniewski set the difference on 21 points, and following a technical foul on Rishon coach Effi Birenboim, the gap kept growing. Early in the last quarter a second technical foul on the Rishon coach forced him to leave the court, and didn't improve his team's situation, as Maccabi increased the gap to 27 points by the final buzzer.
A brilliant night from Yuval Naimi lifted Hapoel Jerusalem over Hapoel Holon 83-85. Naimi recorded 21 points and 10 assists to lead Jerusalem. Holon led by 4 at halftime and thanks to Titus Ivory went into the fourth quarter ahead 66-59. Naimi led Jerusalem back with a steal and basket and then an assist to Kevinn Pinkney. After several lead changes, Naimi scored 5 points in the final minute to carry Jerusalem to the victory. Dijon Thompson added 14 points and 8 rebounds, while ex-Holon Tre Simmons and Pinkney scored 13 apiece for the winners. Dwayne Mitchell led Holon with 26 points.
