Italian Supercup: October 4, 2009
Montepaschi Siena is the new Italian Supercup champion! In the game played on Sunday in Siena, the hosts managed to defeat Virtus Forza Bologna by 87-65 to take its third Italian Supercup in a row, and fourth overall (2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009). Virtus dominated the first quarter, but good accuracy from the three-point line (15 of 31) put Montepaschi on the right track to a clear win for the first title of the season. Romain Sato led the champs with his 19 points, pacing his team in the second half, while Terrell McIntyre posted 15 for Siena. Nikos Zisis, Ben Eze and Ksystof Lavrinovic also added 9 points apiece. For Virtus, Diego Fajardo was the best man with 17 points and LeRoy Hurd added 14.
The first quarter was balanced but Virtus Bologna had the upper hand. Led by Koponen's points, the team from Bologna managed to finish the first quarter leding by 4 points, 13-17. However, Montepaschi reacted in the second period and thanks to solid percentages from the arc, the team from Siena managed to recover and jump ahed, leading by 41-33 at the halftime break thanks to the leadership by McIntyre. Romain Sato's three made it 51-39 midway through the third period as Siene managed to hold on. Siena was up to an 11 of 21 from the three-point line when McIntyre buried one more three, his fifth, to make it 58-43 in minute 28 and then 67-52 after 30 minutes. Diego Fajardo was the man maintaining Virtus in the game, but in the last quarter, Montepaschi managed to keep the lead around the 15 points despite losing the rebounding battle to Virtus, who managed to pull up to 11 offensive boards. In the final minutes, Sato was the man that would put Montepaschi on the right path to take its third Italian Supercup in a row, and fourth overall.
