Russian Cup Final: March 19, 2010
After two seasons without it, CSKA Moscow reclaimed the Russian Cup on Friday night by downing defending champion Unics Kazan by 80-74. Perfect free-throw shooting down the stretch enabled CSKA to hold onto the victory after what had been a close game throughout. CSKA roared ahead early thanks to strong efforts inside but had to fight off an Unics team that never gave up. Ramunas Siskauskas and J.R. Holden combined for 6 perfect free throws in the final 30 seconds, and CSKA was able to avenge its loss in the semifinals of a year ago. Viktor Khryapa led the winners with another stellar all-around performance: 14 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Sasha Kaun also score 14 points and took 6 rebounds, while Siskauskas scored 13, Holden and Andrey Vorontsevich 11 each. For Unics, the top gun was Terrell Lyday with 21 points. Maceij Lampe added 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Kresimir Loncar put up 13 points. CSKA took a solid 25-19 advantage after one quarter, and it was much-needed, because the rest of the way, Unics played the Russian champs even. Unics was still threatening until the end, when CSKA put in the necessary free throws to celebrate its fourth national cup since 2005. In the third-place game, Spartak St. Petersburg defeated Khimki 76-74.
