Russian League, Group A1 and A2, Game 1, April 10-12, 2010
The second stage of the Russian League season got underway over the weekend with Khimki Moscow Region handing defending champion CSKA Moscow its first loss of the season 68-73. In a game that came down to the final minute, Khimki’s defense made the difference, forcing a crucial turnover from Trajan Langdon. Ricky Minard led Khimki with 18 points, Vitali Fridzon added 13 and Timofey Mozgov 11 as the team improved to 14-3. CSKA, which got 23 points from Ramunas Siskauskas, also celebrated the return from injury of team captain Matjaz Smodis, who had 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a block in his first 17 minutes of the season. On Monday, UNICS Kazan stayed ahead of Dynamo Moscow in the battle for third place with an 84-77 win. Kresimir Loncar scored 20 and Marko Popovic 15 to lead UNICS, which is now 10-7. Petr Samoylenko, Terrell Lyday and Igor Zaanskiy added 10 apiece for the winners. Sergei Monya paced Dynamo with 15 points, Alexey Shved had 13, Yuri Vasiliev 12 and Aleksey Savrasenko 11. In other games, Spartak St. Petersburg was a 66-78 road winner against Triumph as James White and Milan Rakovic combined for 45 points and Enisey Krasnoyarsk edged Krasnye Krylya Samara 77-80 as Lionel Chalmers came through with 24 points and Kaspers Kambala added 21 points and 10 rebounds.
