Swiss League, Season 2009-10
The Swiss League starts the 2009-10 season with SAV Vacallo defending its title for the first time and perennial power Benetton Olympic Fribourg waiting in the wings. Vacallo dominated the competition last year and hopes to cement its status as the team to beat. This time around Vacallo managed to keep its main players together for another season, including Matt Schneidermann, Slaven Smiljanic, Dejan Lukovic and Rickey Gibson. It also landed Duane Erwin and Andrija Crnogorac as its main additions. Meanwhile Fribourg brings back Oliver Vogt, Dave Esterkamp and Tresore Quidome and added versatile forward Ronald Yates and swingman Brendon Polyblank. Lugano Tigers, BC Boncourt Red Team and BBC Monthey are among those looking to challenge Vacallo this season. Lugano landed Byron Sanders and Travis Wlton to play alongside Derek Stockalper. Boncourt completely renovated its roster with Pierre Wooten, Damien Goodman, Lewis Monroe and Todd Peterson. And Monthey kept franchise players Herman Alston and Kareem Johnson. There could be a tough battle to dethrone Vacallo in what shapes up as one of the most wide-open starts to the Swiss League in some time.
