Turkish League, Game 3: October 31- November 2, 2009
Fenerbahce Ulker and Besiktas Cola Turka now sit alone atop the Turkish League standings after defending champion Efes Pilsen fell on the road at Turk Telekom. Fenerbahce Ulker trashed Banvit of Bandirma 81-63 to remain unbeaten as Lynn Greer shined with 24 points. Besiktas defeated Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi 74-85 in Mersin for its third win of the season behind 22 points and 8 rebounds from Lonny Baxter. Turk Telekom topped Efes Pilsen 87-83 in a thrilling game that featured nine lead changes and two ties in the fourth quarter alone. Demon Mallet netted 16 points and dished 7 assists for the winners. Galatasaray Cafe Crown struggled but beat Erdemir of Eregli 98-89 in overtime thanks to an extraordinary performance by Darius Washington, who scored 10 of his 28 points in the bonus period. In other games, Bornova Belediye routed Darussafaka Cooper Tires on the road 50-72 as Josh Shipp and Ivan Koljevic scored 14 points apiece, Antalya Bsb. trounced Aliaga Petkim 97-59 thansk to 20 points and 10 assists from Aaron Jackson, Ryan Toolson scored 24 as Pinar Karsiyaka bested Kepez Belediye 88-76 and Tofas edged Oyak Renault 77-74 led by Sean Denison's 18 points.
Turk Telekom topped Efes Pilsen 87-83 in a thrilling game that featured nine lead changes and two ties in the fourth quarter alone. Kris Lang’s tip-in with 2:08 to play was the go-ahead basket for Turk and Demon Mallet's triple stretched the lead to 4 with 45 seconds remaining. Igor Rakocevic scored twice to breath hope for Efes, but Mallet kept Turk ahead with 12 seconds to go and Serkan Erdogan sealed the win from the line with 5 seconds to play. Lamayne Wilson paced the winners with 18 points, Mallet netted 16 points and dished 7 assists, Erdogan recorded 13 points and 5 assists and Ersin Dagli and Bekir Yarangume added 12 points apiece. Rakocevic led Efes with 22 points and 5 assists, Kaya Peker scored 17, Ender Arslan added 16 points and 6 assists and Charles Smith scored 15.
Fenerbahce Ulker trashed Banvit of Bandirma 81-63 to remain unbeaten. FB Ulker, which benched Willie Solomon due to disciplinary issues, was led by Lynn Greer with 24 points. The inside duo of Omer Asik and Oguz Savas controlled the paint early as Fener took the first quarter 22-18. Midway through the second period, Lance Williams tied the game at 35-35, but Fener went on a 7-0 spurt. Banvit however responded with a 2-8 push in the remaining three minutes of the quarter to close within 44-43 by halftime. Fener’s attempts to take the game over were denied by Baris Ermis and Baris Ozcan and an Ozcan jumper midway through the third quarter made it 54-53. Then Greer took over for the rest of the quarter, scoring 13 of Fener’s 20 points in the quarter to make it 64-55 entering the last 10 minutes. Savas’s triple extend the Fener lead to 69-57 early in the fourth quarter and Banvit’s turnovers helped Fener to swell the lead to 18 points and secure the win. Savas scored a season-high, Asik had 10 points plus 8 boards and Gordan Giricek added 12 points for Fener. Williams had 18 points and Charles Davis added 12 for Banvit.
Galatasaray Cafe Crown struggled but beat Erdemir of Eregli 98-89 in overtime thanks to an extraordinary performance by Darius Washington, who scored 10 of his 28 points in the bonus period. Erdemir made an impressive start into the game and led 8-22 lead after seven minutes on Adam Funk’s triple. The home team strengthened its defense in the second quarter and stormed ahead 41-36 by halftime. Erdemir did not allow Galatasaray to pull away any more in the third period as Erkan Veyseloglu dominated to keep it 58-56 heading into the fourth quarter. Veyseloglu put Erdemir ahead once again 60-61 early in the fourth quarter as the game turned to a duel between Veyseloglu and Galatasaray. Funk free throws with 12 seconds left tied the game at 78-78 and forced overtime. Galatasaray made a stunning start to the overtime as Washington exploded with 10 points to seal the outcome. Washington scored 28 points and also grabbed 4 steals, while Michael Wilkinson scored 23 points, Simas Jasaitis had 13, Radoslav Rancik 11 and Cemal Nalga 10 points for Galatasaray. Veyseloglu scored 30 points, Funk 27 and Leon Williams posted of 17 points and 10 rebounds for Erdemir.
Besiktas Cola Turka defeated Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi 74-85 in Mersin for its third win of the season. Lonny Baxter scored 22 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, Brad Newley had 19 points and Mire Chatman finished with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. James Baron and Altan Erol both scored 20 points each for Mersin.
