Greek League Finals, Game 4: June 5, 2011
Panathinaikos champ Heba 2010-11 (photo esake.gr)Turkish Airlines Euroleague champion Panathinaikos Athens capped off a stellar season by winning its ninth straight Greek League title with a thrilling 101-94 overtime home win against archrival Olympiacos on Sunday. The Greens took the best-of-five series 3-1.The clinching victory came despite the fact that continental MVP Dimitris Diamantidis was hurt 1 minute into game and didn't return. The lead went back and forth for 40 minutes until a free throw by Loukas Mavrokefalidis of Olympiacos forced overtime at 83-83. In the last 2 minutes of overtime, the Greens broke an 88-88 tie by exploding for 9 answered points as their fans at OAKA celebrated yet another trophy. Antonis Fotsis hit 6 of 6 three-pointers and led Panathinaikos with 22 points, while Mike Batiste had 20 and Nick Calathes 16. Batiste added 11 rebounds as the Greens outrebounded Olympiacos 42 to 25, while Calathes dished 11 assists. The Reds got 18 points from Vassilis Spanoulis, 16 from Ioannis Bouroussis and 12 from Loukas Mavrokefalidis, but suffered from some missed free throws at key moments of the fourth quarter.

Ian Vougioukas gave Panathinaikos a quick 7-2 lead before Mavrokefalidis sparked a 0-8 Olympiacos response. The lead changed 7 more times until Zoran Erceg's basket put the Reds up 17-18 after one quarter. The lead changes continued until three-pointers by Mikalis Pelekanos and Georgios Printezis had Olympiacos in front 23-30. Then, however, the Greens followed Drew Nicholas and Batiste on a an 18-9 run to finish the first half ahead by 41-39. Panathinaikos went up 44-39 before Mavrokefalidis led an Olympiacos charge to a 49-53 lead on back-to-back triples by Theo Papaloukas and Spanoulis. The Reds led 60-61 after 3 quarters and 62-66 early in the fourth. Batiste answered with 4 consecutive free throws to put Panathinaikos ahead 72-71. A three-point play by Bouroussis reclaimed the advantage for Olympiacos, but so did the second three-point shot of the fourth quarter by Fotsis. Pairs of free throws by Batiste and Fotsis put Panathinaikos up 79-75 going into the final minute. A Spanoulis triple and Bouroussis basket got Olympiacos as close as 82-83 and Mavrokefalidis tied it 83-83 by making 1 of 2 free throws, sending the game to overtime. Romain Sato broke an 88-88 tie after 3 minutes of overtime with free throws, then back-to-back layups by Calathes and the sixth three-pointer by Fotsis got the party started at OAKA.

In the Greek League's third-place series, PAOK pulled out a 80-91 road win at Aris on Sunday to even the series between the Thessaloniki archrivals, 2-2. PAOK hosts Game 5 on Wednesday.
