Italian League, Regular Season, Game 27: April 23, 2011
Montepaschi Siena stayed atop the Italian League standings with an improved 24-2 record by beating Canadian Solar Bologna 72-81 on the road on Saturday. Rimantas Kaukenas led the winners with 17 points. Shaun Stonerook added 13 while Marco Carrareto and Andrea Michelori each had 10 for Montepaschi, that trailed 46-39 at halftime. Montepaschi allowed just 7 points in the third quarter and an oustanding Stonerook allowed his team to get a 53-63 edge after 30 minutes, enough to keep a safe lead from that moment until the final buzzer. In the biggest game in this round, Armani Jeans rallied to beat Bennet Cantu 75-73 in Milano. Cantu is still second at 20-7 with AJ right behind at 19-8. David Hawkins paced the winners with 20 points. Marco Mordente added 15 while Stefano Mancinelli had 11 for Milano. Manu Markoishvili led Cantu with 18 points. Nicolas Mazzarino added 14 while Mike Green had 13 for the guests, that led 43-53 late in the third quarter. An 11-2 run that Hawkins capped with a triple brought Milano back to life, 54-55. Hawkins followed a triple with free throws to seal the outcome, 74-70, as Cantu ran out of time. Lottomatica Roma defeated Pepsi Caserta 74-68 at home. Roma moved up to 13-14 and Caserta dropped to 12-15. Darius Washington paced the winners with 19 points. Vladimir Dasic added 14, Luigi Datome had 13 while Nemanja Gordic got 11 for Roma. Eric Williams led Caserta with 18 points. Jumaine Jones added 17, Ebi Ere 16 and Timmy Bowers 12. A final 6-0 run allowed Roma to win the game. Benetton Treviso improved to 14-12 by edging Vanoli-Braga Cremona 88-86 in overtime at home behind 31 points and 14 rebounds from Donatas Motiejunas. Devin Smith added 21 points while Stefan Markovic had 15 for Benetton. A free throw by Motiejunas sent the game to overtime, 81-81, and Benetton prevailed in the extra period. In other games, Scavolini Siviglia Pesaro thrashed Enel Brindisi 84-64, Air Avellino edged Dinamo Sassari 92-87, Cimberio Varese downed Angelico Biella 81-89 while Banca Tercas Teramo overwhelmed Fabi Shoes Montegranaro 76-47.
