The defending champs had no answer for Holon’s Ron Lewis and Moran Roth, who helped the hosts bolt out to a 16-point first-quarter lead before the score settled at 29-15 after 10 minutes. Some hot shooting from David Blu helped Maccabi cut the gap to 43-40 by halftime and Richard Hendrix and Keith Langford left Maccabi on top 61-63 entering the fourth quarter. The game remained close and Lewis gave Holon a 77-76 edge, however Maccabi finished strong as Langford and Blu went 6 for 6 from the line in the final minutes to wrap up the win. Devin Smith paced Maccabi with 16 points and 7 rebounds, Langford scored 16, Hendrix posted 13 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks and Blu netted 13. Tasmin Mitchell paced Holon with 23 points and Lewis added 19. Maccabi players Lior Eliyahu, Theo Papaloukas, Demond Mallet and Shawn James did not dress for the game. In other games, Hapoel Jerusalem edged Haifa 93-96 in overtime led by Yuval Naimy’s 23 points and 6 assists and a double-double from Elishay Kadir; Ashdod downed Maccabi Rishon 69-80 thanks to 24 points and 10 rebounds from Alex Tyus and BC Habikaa bested Netanya 79-56 behind 24 points and 11 rebounds from Dion Dowell.
