Italian League, Regular Season, Game 23: March 3-4, 2012
Montepaschi Siena outlasted rival EA7 Emporio Armani Milan 77-68 to climb to 16-6 and maintain sole possession of first place in the Italian League. Siena asserted itself early with an 18-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, and kept Milan at arm’s length the rest of the way – the visitors could get no closer than 53-49 in the third quarter. Five Siena players scored in double figures, led Nikos Zisis and David Andersen, who knocked down 13 points apiece, while Bootsy Thorton chipped in 11 and Bo McCalebb and David Moss each added 10. Milan got 16 points from Stefano Mancinelli, 14 from Ioannis Bourousis and 13 from Malik Hairston in a losing effort. Foul shots played a key part in the game, as Siena got 21 points from the line compared with 14 for Milan. With the loss, Milan slipped to 13-9 and joined a scrum in the second- and third-place spots. Umana Venezia leads that group with a 13-7 record after it upended Banca Tercas Teramo 68-78 behind Alvin Young’s 18 points. Bennet Cantu and Banco di Sardegna Sassari are right behind with 13-8 records. Cantu trailed Sidigas Avellino 16-12 after the first quarter, but outscored the opponent in each of the remaining three quarters to earn a 63-73 victory, as Doron Perkins paced the winners with 17 points, while Greg Brunner registered a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds, and Vladimir Micov added 14 points. Cimberio Varese moved up to 12-10 after it walloped Canadian Solar Bologna 86-63 behind Diego Fajardo’s 14 points. Bologna joined Milan at 13-9. Benetton Treviso outscored Novipiu Casale Monferrato 36-25 in the second half to secure a 66-63 victory as Benjamin Ortner led the way with 14 points and 7 rebounds, and Gal Mekel added 11 points with 5 assists. In other games, Vanoli Braga Cremona pasted Acea Roma 87-71 and Fabi Shoes Montegranaro outplayed Angelico Biella 63-73.
