Slovenian Cup semifinals: February 18, 2012
A huge first quarter sent four-time defending champion Union Olimpija on its way to a 51-68 victory over Geoplin Slovan and a place in the Slovenian Cup final on Sunday. Olimpija scored 17 unanswered points to end the first quarter and begin the second, seizing a 12-32 lead. A similar sequence unfolded following Slovan's only threat after that, when it came within 28-35 late in the second quarter. This time, Olimpija scored 16 points in a row before and after halftime to put the game out of reach the rest of the way. Sasu Salin hit 3 three-point shots on his way to leading Olimpija with 16 points. Deon Thompson added 14 points and Vladimir Dasic 10 for the winners, who also got 8 assists from Jan Mocnik. In trying for its 18th trophy in the 21-year history of the tournament, Olimpija will face Krka Novo Mesto, a 70-67 overtime winner against Zlatorog in Saturday's second semifinal. Krka trailed by 52-56 late in the fourth quarter before forcing overtime on free throws by Bojan Krivec with 13 seconds left. Once in the extra period, the same scenario played out. Krka was down 62-65 with 90 seconds left, but used layups by Zoran Dragic and Mustafa Abdul Hamid to take over the scoreboard and head to the title game on Sunday. Jure Balazic led the winners with 17 points while Afik Nissim and Smiljan Pavic added 12 each.
