Spanish League, Regular Season, Game 5: October 29-30, 2011
The last unbeaten team in the Spanish League fell Sunday when Valencia Basket upended Unicaja, which leaves four teams now tied for first place at 4-1: FC Barcelona Regal, Real Madrid, Unicaja and Lucentum Alicante. Valencia downed Unicaja 75-62 behind 22 points from Nando De Colo, who led all scorers, and 17 from Rafa Martinez. Meanwhile the other four Turkish Airlines Euroleague squads in the Spanish League added to the win column. Barcelona beat Fuenlabrada 56-66, getting out early and never looking back. The winners were paced by Juan Carlos Navarro’s 21 points. Madrid also won on the road, taking care of Gran Canaria 60-68. Rudy Fernandez netted 14 points and Felipe Reyes pulled in 13 rebounds for the Whites. Caja Laboral improved to 3-2 by handily defeating Valladolid 64-76 as Mirza Teletovic and Fernando San Emeterio each scored 17 points. Bizkaia Bilbao pummeled UCAM Murcia 95-80 as Aaron Jackson peppered the nets for 18 points. Alicante’s fourth win came by downing Blusens Monbus 69-73 behind 15 points from Kaloyan Ivanov and 14 from Pedro Llompart. And Lagon Aro won its first game of the season by defeating CAI Zaragoza 77-86 behind Andy Panko’s game-high 24 points.
Valencia Basket downed Unicaja 75-62 behind 22 points from Nando De Colo, who led all scorers, and 17 from Rafa Martinez. Unicaja led at the midway point 38-41 but lost its shooting touch in the second half as it scored only 9 points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth. Led by Joel Freeland’s 14 points, Unicaja held its own on the boards, but shot only 3 of 18 from downtown, compared with Valencia’s 8 of 21. FC Barcelona Regal beat Fuenlabrada 56-66, getting out early and never looking back. The winners were paced by Juan Carlos Navarro’s 21 points. Barcelona’s ball movement and more efficient outside shooting got the better of Fuenlabrada, which won the battle of the boards, 42-36, but could not convert the advantage into points. Along with Navarro’s 21 points, Marcelinho Huertas added 13 and 5 assists and Erazem Lorbek contributed 12 points. Leo Mainoldi led the home team with 14 points.
Real Madrid also won on the road, taking care of Gran Canaria 60-68. Rudy Fernandez netted 14 points and Felipe Reyes pulled in 13 rebounds for the Whites. With the score knotted 24-24 at the half, Madrid dominated the third quarter 15-30 to take control. Carlos Suarez added 10 for Madrid. Michael Bramos paced Granca with 15 points. Bizkaia Bilbao pummeled UCAM Murcia 95-80 as Aaron Jackson peppered the nets for 18 points. The hosts dominated in the first half, after which they led 53-27 and Murcia never mounted a serious run afterwards. Marko Banic added 14 points and Kostas Vasileiadis had 11 for the winning team. Caja Laboral improved to 3-2 by handily defeating Valladolid 64-76 as Mirza Teletovic and Fernando San Emeterio each scored 17 points. Caja Laboral shot 67% from the field to pull ahead of Valladolid after the teams ended the first half knotted at 36-36. Thomas Heurtel added 10 for Laboral.
