Spanish League, Regular Season, Game 17: January 21-22, 2012
FC Barcelona Regal and Real Madrid both won to continue on top of the Spanish League, while two of their three nearest rivals lost, giving the leaders a little breathing room. Barcelona was pushed to the brink by CAI Zaragoza, but pulled out the victory at home 71-68, thanks to clutch free throws by Juan Carlos Navarro, who returned after a month-long injury. Zaragoza, fighting for King’s Cup qualification, took a 61-64 lead into the last minute on a triple by Carlos Cabezas, but Navarro came up big on the foul line, especially in last stages of the fourth quarter, going 12 of 12 for the game. He led the winners with 17 points, while Erazem Lorbek added 16, the only other player in double figures. Cabezas paced the losers with 14 points. Real Madrid dominated second-place Caja Laboral at home 84-73, winning three of the four quarters. Felipe Reyes came up big with a double-double, registering 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Carlos Suarez knocked down 17 and Martynas Pocius added 12. Sergio Rodriguez dished out 8 assists. Caja Laboral, now 12-5, got 18 points from Brad Oleson, who nailed 4 of 9 from downtown. Assigna Manresa took out Unicaja at home 86-68, getting the better of the losers on the boards, 39 to 29, and from three-point range, 48% to 26%. Justin Doellman and Micah Downs had 19 points apiece to lead the winners, while Josh Asselin added 17. The losers got 17 points from Kristaps Valters. Unicaja slipped to 12-6. Lucentum Alicante was the only team on the top of the board to keep pace with the leaders, lifting its record to 13-5 after it outgunned Asefa Estudiantes 68-76 on the road, as Tyrone Ellis knocked down 15 points, Pedro Llompart had 14 with 8 assists and Kaloyan Ivanov added 12. Gescrap Bizkaia took care of Blusens Monbus 65-79 on the road, as D’or Fischer rose to the occasion with a double-double, scoring 23 points on 10 of 11 from two-point range and adding 11 rebounds. Marko Banic added 15 points for the winners. FIATC Mutua Joventut held on to beat Valencia Basket at home 81-73, as the visitors tried but failed to overcome a 42-23 halftime deficit. Five players scored in double figures for Joventut, led by Derrick Obasohan’s 13 points. Cajasol Banca Civica outdeulled Gran Canaria 2014 at home 75-70 as Paul David led the way with 15 points. In other games, Lagun Aro outlasted UCAM Murcia 85-89 on the road, and Fuenlabrada defeated Blancos de Rueda Valladolid at home 65-54.
