Spanish League quarterfinals, Game 1: May 17-18, 2012
The four top seeds all won their Spanish League quarterfinals series at home on Thursday and Friday to move within a victory of the semifinals. FC Barcelona Regal trounced Lucentum Alicante 73-43, Valencia Basket routed Lagun Aro GBC 82-60 and Caja Laboral bested rival Gescrap Bizkaia 77-73. In Friday’s lone game, Real Madrid pulled away late to beat Banca Civica 82-68. Barcelona simply dominated from start to finish. With a tremendous defensive presence and great three-point shooting, the hosts took the opening quarter 21-6 and never let up, putting the finishing touches on the big win with a 21-9 fourth quarter. Marcelinho Huertas led the attack with 14 points and 6 assists, Chuck Eidson added 12 points and 5 assists and Fran Vazquez scored 11. Mario Stojic led Alicante with 9 points. Valencia rode a red-hot Nando De Colo to victory. De Colo led the hosts to a 44-37 halftime lead. Then he scored 10 in a 17-3 blitz to finish the third quarter than put Valencia firmly in control at 66-47 and Lagun Aro never recovered. De Colo finished with 26 points and 4 assists, Nik Caner-Medley added 18 points and 12 rebounds and Vitor Faverani added 12 and 8 for the winners. Sergi Vidal paced Lagun Aro with 14 points. Rivals Laboral and Bilbao kept it close until the bitter end. It was tied 42-42 at halftime and the visitors led by 2 entering the fourth quarter. But a hard-fought Mirza Teletovic basket with two minutes to go made it 71-66 and seemed to break Gescrap BB’s spirit too as Laboral held on for the win. Teletovic finished with 19 points and Fernando San Emeterio added 13 for the winning side. Aaron Jackson paced Bilbao with 18 points. Madrid started out strong and built a double digit lead after one quarter, 26-16. Banca Civica stormed back with a 3-15 run capped by a Carl English three to take a 29-31 lead and at halftime the score settled at 38-40. It remained close through the third quarter and some nice plays by Sergio Llull and a basket-plus foul by Felipe Reyes pushed Madrid ahead by 2 midway through the fourth. But an ill-timed scoring drought for the visitors allowed Madrid to reel off 14 unanswered points for an 80-64 lead and Banca Civica never recovered. Kyle Singler led Madrid with 14 points and Reyes and Llull added 13 each. Txemi Urtasun paced the visitors with 19.
