Ukrainian League playoffs, Quarterfinals Game 3: April 22-23
Ferro-ZNTU became the first team into the Ukrainian League semifinals and the only one to sweep – despite not having home-court advantage! – as it knocked out BC Khimik, while BC Donetsk, BC Azovmash and BC Odesa took 2-1 series leads. Regular season champ Donetsk raced ahead in the third quarter and Dnipro’s late comeback came up short as the visitors won 78-82. Viacheslav Kravtsov scored 22 and Ramel Curry 16 for the winners. Azovmash topped Hoverla 72-77 in what was a 1-point game with five and a half minutes to go. But after Yaroslav Lemyk brought Hoverla within 69-72 with three minutes to go, Othello Hunter responded with a pair of baskets for Azovmash, which held on. Jerome Randle scored 20 and Hunter finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Odesa painted Budivelnik into a corner with a 98-99 overtime win. Jason Rowe’s three-pointer with 5 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 82-82 and Zach Morley was unable to score for Budivelnik at the buzzer. In overtime, a Morley triple put Budivelnik up 84-90 and Luis Flores had the visitors up 90-95 with a minute to go, but Rowe charged Odesa with the next 4 points and eventually tied the game from the line with 9 seconds to go. Flores made it 96-98 with a pair of free throws with 5 seconds left, which proved to be enough time for Justin Love to sink a game-winning three, which puts Odesa on the verge of a spot in the semifinals. Love paced the winners with 22 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists and Rowe and Sean King each netted 21 for Odesa. Flores finished with 22 in defeat. Ferro-ZNTU wrapped up its series by beating Khimik 95-79 behind an amazing 40-point effort by Randy Culpepper.
