Kalise Gran Canaria Champ!!

The Torneo Città di Roma has a new champion! It is none other than Kalise Gran Canaria of Spain who, in the final, got rid of Montepaschi Siena of Italy by a solid 57-68 after leading for most of the 40 minutes. Both teams had already earned the right to be in the final phase of the Nike International Junior Tournament to be played in Berlin in 2009 starting on April 30, coinciding with the Euroleague Final Four. Oscar Alvarado, named tourney MVP, led the winners with 15 points each. After three quarters it was already 38-53 and the Spanish team cruised to the title in the final period. In the game for the third place, Virtus Bologna defeated Zalgiris Kaunas by 82-102. The tournament honorees were completed with top scorer Mirza Sarajlija of Union Olimpija and the All Tournament Team formed by Montepaschi's Simone Centanni and Nika Metrevelli; Zalgiris' Giedrius Staniulius; Kalise's Alejandro Lopez and Virtus' Riccardo Moraschini. More teams will qualify from upcoming tournaments in L’Hospitalet, Spain, next weekend and in Belgrade, Serbia from February 13 to 15. |
