Fresh off a perfect season in which it won the five titles it played for, Real Madrid starts a new one with a bang by hosting the Boston Celtics at BarclayCard Center on Thursday as part of NBA Global Games 2015 presented by BBVA, in a game that will be featuring the two winningest teams on each side of the Atlantic.
Real Madrid just arrived from Brazil last week, when it won the Intercontinental Cup against Bauru in a two-game series. In the first game, the Brazilian team prevailed 91-90, but in the second game two days later, Los Blancos made sure they won the trophy with a 91-79 decision, thanks to an outstanding performance by Sergio Llull with 21 points and 6 assists.
Boston is making its third trip to Europe. Back in 2012, Boston lost to Fenerbahce in Istanbul and defeated EA7 Emporio Armani Milan in Italy. Boston also played in Madrid back in 1988, at the McDonald's Open, in a tournament that featured legendary shooters from both sides of the Atlantic. The Celtics defeated the Yugoslavian national team 113–85 and went on to down Real Madrid 111-96. Larry Bird led the way against Madrid with 29 points and earned tournament MVP honors. Drazen Petrovic led Madrid with 22 points. This week, Boston already defeated EA7 Emporio Armani Milan on Tuesday 91-124.
This will be a historic showdown between the two winningest teams from both sides of the Atlantic. Boston won 17 NBA championships between 1957 and 2008, making it the team with the most NBA titles by far. Meanwhile, Real Madrid just won its ninth Euroleague last year and first since 1995. Madrid pulled away in a ranking that it has been leading for decades. It also won titles in 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1974, 1978, 1980, 1995 and 2015.
Los Blancos have some experience against NBA teams. Since 1988 they have played six times against teams from the American league and beat the Toronto Raptors in 2007, 103-104. This will be the seventh time the defending Euroleague champs square off against a team from the NBA, so fasten your seatbelts and expect a great game tonight in Madrid between two of the top teams on the planet!
