The home of the Final Four: Palau Sant Jordi
The Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four returns to the state-of-the-art Palau Sant Jordi for the third time, the perfect venue for such an exciting world-class event. Palau Sant Jordi, built for the 1992 Olympic Games, is much more than a sporting arena, but a multi-purpose installation that can also host all kind of events, such as concerts and other cultural activities, as well as one of the biggest icons in this city. Its flexibility is out of the question, as Palau Sant Jordi has been home of the 2000 and 2009 Davis Cup finals, the 1995 Track and Field indoor World Championships or the 2003 Swimming World Championships, featuting an elite swimming pool built in record time. Some of the best pop and rock bands in the world, such as U2, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Elton John, R.E.M. or Coldplay - just to name a few out of hundreds - have played live at Palau Sant Jordi. Designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, Palau Sant Jordi opened on September 21, 1990. It hosted the artistic gymnastics, handball final and volleyball final at the 1992 Olympics.
Palau Sant Jordi host its first big basketball event right after opening and has been linked to the sport ever since. It was home to the 1990 McDonald's Open, in which the New York Knicks needed overtime to beat Scavolini Pesaro and won the title against Split. It also host EuroBasket 1997's final stages, but the Euroleague took the venue to a whole different level. In 1998, Palau Sant Jordi welcomed the 1998 Final Four, in which Kinder Bologna won its first Euroleague title. The Final Four returned in 2003, in an event that nobody in Barcelona will ever forget. Almost 20 years after the first of five previous losing attempts in the final game, FC Barcelona got it right in 2003, winning its first Euroleague title in front of 16,670 fans at this arena. FC Barcelona has also been able to beat two NBA teams - Philadelphia 76ers in 2006, reigning NBA champions Los Angeles Lakers barely months ago - at Palau Sant Jordi. Eight years later, the Final Four is back to Palau Sant Jordi, still a top-notch European arena more 20 years after being opened.
