Minyons de Terrassa bring 'castellers' experience to Final Four
Among other things, Catalonia is famous for its art, architecture and athletic feats. Nothing quite captures those three characteristics at once like the ‘castellers’, the region’s traditional man-made skyscrapers, an art form that has already been recognized by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. One of the area’s top groups – or colles – the Minyons de Terrassa, will bring this unique Catalan spectacle to the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four at the Palau Sant Jordi, where they will perform for the entertainment of the fans.
Founded in 1979, Minyons de Terrassa is one of two human castle squads located in the city of Terrassa, 25 kilometers from Barcelona. The “castellers” tradition is believed to have started around the 18th century near Tarragona area, with groups competing to create human castles of different levels and heights. The “casteller” gatherings quickly spread around Catalonia and have grown in popularity over the last 40 years. The process involves two stages: “loading” (building the castle level by level until a young child known as the “anxaneta” reaches the top), and “unloading” (dismantling the castle in its entirety while avoiding collapse).
Wearing their distinctive purple, the Minyons de Terrassa have literally built a name for themselves in the casteller world by putting together some spectacular castles. Over the years the Minyons have become one of the best known squads among aficionados, standing out for their performances as well as their social and human values. As one of their sport’s main ambassadors, they will be on hand to perform during the opening day of games at the Final Four on Friday, May 6, offering a chance for fans to enjoy the experience of a lifetime.
