Montepaschi Siena beats Madrid for third place
Montepaschi Siena completed an outstanding Turkish Airlines Euroleague season by beating Real Madrid 62-80 on Sunday in the Third-Place Game at the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. Ksistof Lavrinovic scored 17 points to pace the Italian champs in a game they controlled from start to finish. An early 0-10 lead put Siena in the drivers’ seat and although Madrid never quit, riding a standout showing from Sergio Llull, Montepaschi never faltered. David Moss added 11 points, Bo McCalebb scored 10 and Milovan Rakovic posted 8 points and 11 rebounds for the victors. Llull scored 23 and Felipe Reyes and Ante Tomic added 8 points apiece for Madrid.
Marko Jaric
Few players get to chance win Euroleague titles a decade apart, but Montepaschi Siena veteran Marko Jaric will try just that at the Final Four in Barcelona this weekend. Since signing with Siena at midseason, the 32-year-old combo guard has adjusted admirably to his new teammates.
Simone Pianigiani
As a son of Siena, 41-year-old head coach Simone Pianigiani has devoted his professional life to lifting his hometown club into Europe's elite. Pianigiani was an assistant coach when Montepaschi Siena won its very first trophy, the 2002 Saporta Cup and when it reached Euroleague Final Fours the next two seasons.
Malik Hairston
Despite many ups and downs, this has already been a debut season to remember for Montepaschi Siena forward Malik Hairston. The first-year forward missed part of the preseason with an injury and played briefly on opening night before needing surgery that kept him out six more weeks.
Shaun Stonerook
On the road to the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four in Barcelona next month, Shaun Stonerook of Montepaschi Siena has it very clear, after a semifinals loss in 2008, that he and his team have to milk this new and perhaps unexpected opportunity for all its worth.
Nikos Zisis
His nickname is "Lord of the Rings" - and with good reason. Montepaschi Siena point guard Nikos Zisis has won a title or medal in each of the last seven years. Now, he heads to Barcelona looking for his second Euroleague title.
Simone Pianigiani
With a second trip to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four in only his fifth season as a head coach, Simone Pianigiani of Montepaschi Siena has cemented his status as one of the game's elite tacticians.
Roberto Chiacig
One of the most reliable European centers of his generation, Roberto Chiacig anchored the middle at Montepaschi for six years, helping the Siena squad make the transition from middle-of-the-pack Italian League team to European powerhouse.
Montepaschi surprises Reds, returns to Final Four!
Montepaschi Siena completed a historic series win over Olympiacos with an 88-76 victory at the Palaestra to win their Quarterfinal Playoffs series 3-1 and clinch a spot in the Final Four. Siena, who last made the Final Four in 2008, will head to Barcelona after an impressive come-from-behind performance.
