The young big man proved ready to jump in the action every time his name was called in his debut Turkish Airlines Euroleague season. Officially the tallest man on CSKA’s roster, Ivan Lazarev got his first Euroleague minutes early in the Top 16 after an injury to the starting center Joel Freeland and was soon inserted into the starting lineup against powerhouse FC Barcelona Lassa. He needed only two-and-a-half minutes on the floor to make his presence felt and score his first points in the competition. He learned quickly as more opportunities came along, and provided necessary depth for the often-depleted CSKA frontcourt. Despite not getting an opportunity at the Final Four in Berlin, Lazarev did not shy away on big stages; he provided important contributions in each game of the playoff sweep against Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade, and now, only at the age of 25, can proudly call himself a Euroleague champion.
