The Take

A rare Wednesday tipoff is also a crucial one for Real Madrid, which risks falling as far as fifth place - outside the Top 16 qualification spots, with four games left in the regular season - should it lose. Expect two of the competition's top six teams in scoring, rebounds, blocks, three-pointers made and performance index rating to put on a show. Khimki dominated their season opener, but has not yet won away from Moscow. There are dream matchups in the backcourt, where Madrid's star quartet of Rudy Fernandez, Sergio Llull, Jaycee Carroll and Sergio Rodriguez will be shadowed step-for-step by Tyrese Rice, Alexey Shved and Petteri Koponen. In the frontcourt, Felipe Reyes leads Madrid teammates Gustavo Ayon, Trey Thompkins and Andres Nocioni against Khimki's quartet of Paul Davis, James Augustine, Marko Todorovic and Tyler Honeycutt. In between could prove decisive as Jonas Maciulis and on-the-rise Jeffery Taylor will be confronted at small forward by hard-charging Zoran Dragic and veteran Sergey Monia. Khimki leads the league in blocks (5.8 per game), while Ayon ranks second individually (1.8). Madrid's top-ranked offensive rebounders (13.8) will put Khimki's fourth-best defensive rebounders (26.8) to the test, too. In a battle that features not only last season's Euroleague and Eurocup champions, but the last two Final Four MVPs, Rice and Nocioni, expect fireworks early in the week between these two well-matched and extremely ambitious teams.

"Our goal in the group is to be strong at home. Away we have not achieved that, we have not been able to win any games. We had a complicated calendar and now we welcome one of the great teams in the league. It's an important and attractive game. I expect a great atmosphere in the gym and I trust that my team will answer well to the situation. I think we must take a step forward regarding personal efforts in defense. We must be ready to play high-level games like tomorrow's. Regarding individual talent and structure, to me, Khimki is one of the best Euroleague teams. Rice is a dominant player in his position and he can generate game for his teammates and score. Koponen is a great shooter and dribbles well, Shved comes from the NBA and has been a referent in all the teams he has played with, also here. We also have Dragic, Honeycutt, Vyaltsev... Khimki's backcourt is complete and can do many things. Inside, they are a solid team with David and Augustine, who we know from the Spanish League. They are players with great skills under the boards, just like Todorovic, who had a great season last year. Add to that Monya's versatility and you have on of the Euroleague greats."

"We have a knotty situation in our group. Both teams, Real Madrid and Khimki, need this win and we are preparing for that. Now we go to Madrid and, for sure, we want to win. Our opponent plays differently. At home, they usually perform well but not so solid as in the last years. Everything can happen but I know that it will be very tough. They have a full 15-thousand gym and with this support and emotions, they do really well. We know Real Madrid, their values, their fast basketball and we will try to compete."

"After this first leg the home games are even more important. We must be strong and win at all costs. The fans will be the key in the home games because they give us strength, especially in those difficult moments when games get more complicated. They are our sixth man and that's why we will need them again. We are having some problems in defense, but we saw another attitude in the team this last weekend. We are ready and focused to play good defense. The last Spanish League game gave us some more confidence and now the team needs to perform well in defense."

"It was a tough feeling after teh loss to Fenerbahce because we had game in our hands. We gave our best but unfortunately, Fenerbahce was better that game. So now, we have another game with Real Madrid and I think it will be a totally different matchup comparing to the first game in Khimki. It will be tough but if we play as we did in the first game, I think we can make some great stuff. We need to forget what happened in Istanbul as we have new plays. You can win and you can lose games but you just need to be focused all the time. We need to prepare as much as possible and try to win it. Real is playing better right now but they lost to Strasbourg last week and everybody feels the same. They didn’t change so much and now we know each other better. It will be tough."
  • Sergio Llull is ninth on the Euroleague’s all-time assists charts with 620 career assists. He needs 7 more assists to catch Marcelinho Huertas for eighth place. Sergio Rodriguez (617 assists) is ranked 10th.
  • Rudy Fernandez has made at least 1 three-pointer in 24 of his last 25 Euroleague games.
  • Trey Thompkins has made 26 consecutive free throws in Euroleague games.
  • Jaycee Carroll has made 11 consecutive free throws in Euroleague games.
  • Carroll has made at least 1 three-pointer in four straight and nine of his last 10 Euroleague games.
  • This will be the sixth meeting between these two teams. Thus far, the home team has won all five.
  • Egor Vyaltsev is a perfect 11 for 11 from the free throw line over his Euroleague career.

LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"Congratulations to Khimki for this win. We played with a lot of anxiety throughout the game. It was a balanced game in which Madrid dominated most aspects of the game - rebounds, turnovers, but had a bad shooting night. I am not especially worried about the standings; we know we will qualify if we win all four games, that we may not qualify if we win three, but also that we may qualify with two wins, too. I am worried about our next game, but the feeling I get is good and we should not be afraid of anyone."
KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Khimki Moscow Region
"We played good defense and played with good effort, good energy. For sure, we made less mistakes today in the end because against Fenerbahce we made a lot of turnovers and mistakes on defense at the end of the game. We are a little more experienced from that game and I am happy with this results. Beating Real Madrid on the road is not easy. It is a great victory. We knew it would be really difficult to beat Madrid. We wanted to control the game for all 40 minutes and stop Madrid's comebacks. Even when they look like they are out of the game, Madrid always finds the way to come back, but we were able to stop that."

Players

FERNANDEZ, RUDY
Real Madrid
"We trailed all the way, even though we played good defense. It was not the lack of attitude; we played well, played good defense and didn't have the luck that we had in other games. We still have to play four more games and these are like four finals for us."
TODOROVIC, MARKO
Khimki Moscow Region
"It is our second win against Real Madrid in this year's Euroleague, and the fact that we beat them twice says a lot of good things about us. This is a valuable win for us, not only because we beat Real Madrid, but also because we finally managed to win on the road. We were close to it against Fenerbahce in Turkey, but couldn't make it, but we did it this time, in a place where not many teams will do this."
RICE, TYRESE
Khimki Moscow Region
"It is a big game for us, a big win on the road. We knew we had to come out and play hard to get this win here. It was big for us. It is my first win here, also. I think I have only seen Valencia winn here, it is definitely an accomplishment for us to get a big win on the road. I just try to do whatever it takes for the team. Some days I am scoring the basketball and some days I am just passing the ball. Wherever it takes to win games, I am trying to do that."
