Tribute to the champs, Olympiacos: Martynas Gecevicius!
By winning the 2011-12 Turkish Airlines Euroleague title, Martynas Gecevicius has joined an exclusive club of just six people to win Europe's strongest club competitions this decade. Gecevicius won the Eurocup with Lietuvos Rytas in 2009 - and lifted the Euroleague trophy with the Reds. He arrived in Piraeus last summer and got off to a very strong start of the season. Gecevicius averaged 14 points in his first two Euroleague games with the Reds. He played a very important role in Coach Ivkovic's rotation until the end of the Top 16, when the rise of Kostas Sloukas and the arrival of Acie Law impacted Gecevicius’s playing time. Gecevicius lived up to his deadly shooting standards by hitting 41.3% of his attempted three-pointers and 84.6% of free throw attempts this season. Gecevicius did not play in the Final Four, but at age 24 and with four Euroleague seasons on his back, the future belongs to him.
