Tribute to the Champs: Luigi Datome
Luigi Datome won the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague trophy in his seventh season in the competition after playing a key role off the bench during the Final Four. Datome scored 8 points and drew 5 fouls in 13 minutes in the semifinal against Real Madrid. He was even better in the championship game against Olympiacos Piraeus. Datome had scored only 1 point midway through the third quarter, when Fenerbahce led 49-44. He hit free throws, fired in a three-pointer and nailed a jumper from the elbow before the end of the third quarter. By the time he struck again from downtown, Fenerbahce led 63-50 and Datome had scored 10 of his team's last 14 points to be well on its way to winning its first EuroLeague title. In a memorable on-court moment, Datome kept his promise and allowed teammate Pero Antic to cut his ponytail on the podium. It quickly became an unforgettable image from a special night for Fenerbahce fans and for Datome, who became the first Italian player to win the competition in seven years – since Gianluca Basile lifted the trophy with FC Barcelona in 2010.
