NIKE IJT Madrid 2008, report: Zalgiris Kaunas 92-89 Maccabi Teddy
Zalgiris Kaunas earned its second win in the tournament in the closing game of the last day, a 92-89 triumph over Maccabi Teddy Tel Aviv. Zalgiris missed two main players Siim-Sander Vene and Tautvydas Slezas, but didn't expect Maccabi, who was easily beaten in the first two days, to give them a hard time. Nevertheless Maccabi dominated the game, and only a come back by Zalgiris, capped with a corner three pointer by Karolis Mikulicius in the last second, put the Lithuanians on top. Donatas Motiejunas led Zalgiris with 19 points and eight rebounds, Matas Sapiega scored 18 while Vytenis Cizauskas scored 16 and Mikulicius 15. Maccabi saw 19 points and 12 rebounds by Carmel Bouchman, followed with 17 points by Daniel Rom, Ben Reis added 12 and Noam Levy scored 11.
Maccabi showed from the start what's planned when they took a 6-15 lead after Rom scored a bucket, but Motiejunas led Zalgiris for a 19-19 tie after ten minutes. Maccabi made another run but saw Zalgiris come back again, this time to take the lead before Reis scored with the half time buzzer to make it 41-42 for his team at half time. Rom and Bouchman found their rhythm and kept Maccabi up by a small lead throughout the third quarter, and set the ground for the next push. With seven minutes on the clock Maccabi climbed to an 11 point lead, but then Zalgiris replied with an 18-4 run to take the lead again just before the finale. Sapiega pushed the gap to six before Maccabi made one last attempt and four hits from the line tied the game at 89-89 entering the last seconds, and then a Lithuanian shot a three pointer.
