THE TEAM: Olympiacos
A remarkably strong and consistent season for Olympiacos Piraeus has the club just where it wanted to be: in Paris for springtime, within striking distance of its second Euroleague crown. The Reds went undefeated at home this year, riding the league's top-ranked attack. A roster full of stars that blended youth with experience also boasted enough size, speed and athleticism to send Olympiacos to the Final Four with high hopes. Head coach Panagiotis Giannakis worked with his charges all season to create a fine-tuned, unselfish machine that knows how to handle pressure. If anyone doubted the team's power after a 3-2 start to the regular season, including a road loss against Partizan, its semifinal opponent at this Final Four, the Reds were quick to convince otherwise. Olympiacos reeled off a streak of five victories to win Group B early, then started the Top 16 with five more, clinching first place in that round, too. That 10-game winning streak was tied for the second longest in the Euroleague this season. In the Quarterfinal Playoffs, Olympiacos hurdled a stiff challenge from Asseco Prokom to reach Paris and give itself a new shot at Euroleague glory. A number of players have come together to take Olympiacos to new heights this season. Point guard Milos Teodosic has benefited from the tutelage of veteran Theo Papaloukas to give the team a pair of world-class playmakers. Newcomer Linas Kleiza has been remarkably consistent as a rebounder and scorer, while forward Josh Childress has dominated at both ends of the floor when needed. Likewise, big Sofoklis Schortsanitis has enjoyed his best season in several years, reestablishing himself as a force in the paint. Their efforts combined with the leadership and talents of players like Nikola Vujcic, Ioannis Bourousis, Scoonie Penn and Yotam Halperin have Olympiacos ready to pounce on its season-long goal: a trophy-lifting ceremony in Paris.
