THE TEAM: Regal FC Barcelona
Regal FC Barcelona is back for its record 11th Final Four with the same uniforms, the same coach and many of the same players who finished in third place last season in Berlin. But this is not the same team. Barcelona has been determined to do greater things this season, using a pervasive defense and a brilliant transition attack to hurdle the competition en route to Paris. Head coach Xavi Pascual’s men simply dominated the early months of the season, winning their regular season group with a perfect record and an average margin of victory of 20.8 points. Barcelona didn't hit its first bump until Week 2 of the Top 16, losing for the first time all season at Partizan only after its last-second shot missed. Barcelona bounced back quickly, however, taking its next two games against defending champ Panathinaikos to win another group and set up a Quarterfinal Playoffs battle with archrival Real Madrid. Barcelona was challenged in Game 1 and upset in Game 2, but rode Juan Carlos Navarro’s excellent play in the Spanish capital to win Games 3 and 4 on the road to qualify again to the Final Four. Barcelona's biggest names are Navarro and teenage icon Ricky Rubio, an often-unstoppable guard tandem, but the team’s greatness resides in balance and depth. Veterans Jaka Lakovic and Ginaluca Basile add balance to the backcourt. Small forward Pete Mickeal has become a two-way anchor in the middle of the lineup, while the big-man quartet of Fran Vazquez, Erazem Lorbek, Boni Ndong and Terence Morris make up one of the strongest Euroleague frontcourts in memory. With its ultimate goal now in sight, Barcelona comes to Paris looking to bring its second Euroleague trophy home.
