THE CLUB: Regal FC Barcelona
Regal FC Barcelona stands second to none when it comes to competing in several team sports at the highest level. Basketball has never been an exception, as Barcelona has consistently ranked among the top European powerhouses over the last three decades. Founded in 1926, Barcelona's basketball team took off in European competition with a golden generation of players featuring Nacho Solozabal, Chicho Sibilio, Juan Antonio San Epifanio and Andres Jimenez, all of whom led the team to the 1984 Euroleague final. Banco di Roma stood on its way to the title, but Barcelona found success in other European competitions, winning back-to-back Cup Winners' Cup titles in 1985 and 1986 in addition to the Korac Cup the following year. After Audie Norris joined the team, Barcelona went one step higher, becoming the team to beat in Spain and reaching the Euroleague final in 1990 and 1991 - losing both times against legendary Jugoplastika Split. Led by Arturas Karnisovas and Sasha Djordjevic, Barcelona reached two more Euroleague finals in 1996 and 1997, but lost them against Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, respectively. That streak of five defeats in Euroleague finals changed forever in 2003, when a sea of its fans watched Barcelona lift the top continental trophy at home and the whole city erupted in celebration. Barcelona seized the 2003 Euroleague crown with a brilliant 76-65 victory over Benetton behind 20 points from the great Dejan Bodiroga and major contributions from Sarunas Jasikevicius, Gregor Fucka and homegrown talent Juan Carlos Navarro. The 2010 Final Four will be Barcelona’s third since the 2003 title and its record 11th overall. As always, this elite team arrives with but one objective: to pick up the Euroleague crown and thereby add to the always-growing legend of FC Barcelona.
