EUROLEAGUE ALL-DECADE CANDIDATE: Matjaz Smodis
True champions shine in the most important games, and that is exactly what CSKA Moscow forward Matjaz Smodis has done all decade. Smodis is a seven-time finalist since the Euroleague started in 2000, a fact that speaks for itself - and loudly. Smodis has been a natural mismatch due to his rare combination of size, shooting and post skills. Smodis won his original Euroleague title with Kinder Bologna in 2001. After two more title-game appearances in the next three seasons, with Kinder and Fortitudo Bologna, opportunity knocked again with a move to Moscow. Smodis and CSKA won two Euroleague titles together in three seasons between 2006 and 2008, falling short only by a basket in the middle year. He and CSKA were back in the final in 2009, the year he was named the team's first non-Russian captain. As the decade ends, Smodis is on a short list of three-time continental champs, looking to become one again.
