Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv suffered a double-digit loss in the Israeli Basketball League for the second time in as many weeks, falling 83-71 at Hapoel Holon on Monday night. Maccabi arrived to Holon without Marcus Fizer who stayed home with high fever, as well as Nikola Vujcic and Tal Burstein, who are out with long-term injuries. Holon's 12-point win is a little deceiving since the hosts enjoyed a bigger lead throughout most of the last quarter, and held an 18-point margin in the closing minutes. The game got off to a a slow start as both teams committed many turnovers and missed easy shots as Maccabi took a 16-19 lead at the end of the first quarter. Maccabi woke up first and built a 7-point lead, but before halftime Avishay Gordon nailed a three-pointer that made it 31-29 at the break. The teams stayed close in the third quarter and Vonteego Cummings made it 54-52 after 30 minutes. Everything changed in the opening minutes of the fourth, when Holon made a 14-2 run, capped by a big dunk by Eric Campbell. Alex Garcia was the only Maccabi player who was able to find the net, while Holon's high-energy game continued to leave Maccabi without words. P.J. Tucker and Campbell were all over the court, and only in the closing seconds did Maccabi score 5 points in a row to make the final score less embarrassing. Campbell led Holon with 23 points, Tre Simmons added 18, Tucker had 13 and 10 rebounds, while Moran Roth scored 12 for the winning side. Garcia led Maccabi with 17 and David Bluthenthal added 10, most of them in the first half.
Jerusalem enjoyed a 98-89 win over ULEB Cup counterparts Hapoel Galil Elyon in a game that was moved up to Saturday night. Jerusalem maintained its perfect home record. The hosts took a quick 6-0 lead, and Marcus Slaughter dunked to make it 11-2, but from that point Galil was strong in the game. Gili Mosinzon helped the visitors make it just 23-20 at the end of the first quarter, and from that point on it was a close game. Galil even took the lead in the second quarter, before Jaime Arnold gave Jerusalem a 43-42 lead at halftime. The lead changed hands several times, but Jerusalem woke up in time to take an 8-point lead, before Yogev Ohayon scored twice from the line to cut the margin to 68-65. Jai Lewis tied the game at 73-73 with eight minutes to go, but from that point on Jerusalem took over. Timmy Bowers led a 10-0 run, and despite Galil getting back within 2 once again, Sharon Shason and Ramel Curry hit from long range, and four hits without a miss from the free throw line secured the win. Arnold was the top scorer of Hapoel with 21 points on 9-of-10 from the field, Bowers scored 21 as well, Guy Pnini had 15, Curry 14 and Shason 10. Lewis led Galil with 22 points and only 2 missed field goals, Mike Campbell added 20, while Mosinzon and Ohayon scored 14 each.
