Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius remained in control of the Lithuanian League after downing rival Zalgiris Kaunas 74-64 on Saturday. L. Rytas remains unbeaten atop the table with a 9-0 record, while Zalgiris suffered its first defeat and now sits in second at 8-1. Facing a crowd of 11,600 fans at the packed Siemens Arena, the visitors from Kaunas took a slim 16-21 slim cushion at the end of the first quarter and still led 39-40 at halftime. However back from the lockers, an amazing performance by Marjonas Petravicius helped the hosts take a 58-53 lead heading into the fourth quarter and head coach Aleksandar Trifunovic’s men never relented to remain the top team in the league. Petravicius posted a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds to carry the winners, while four other teammates scored in double figures: Hollis Price scored 12, Chuck Eidson 11 and Mindaugas Lukauskis and Matt Nielsen 10 points each. Zalgiris got 224 points from Marcus Brown and DeJuan Collins finished with 17 points and 5 assists. The main difference between the clubs was on the boards as the hosts overwhelmed Zalgiris 41-26. In a run-and-gun style game that needed also an extra session, Alytus Alyta edged Siauliai 120-123. The two teams now share third place with 5-4 records. Saulius Kazevicius scored 41 and dished 7 assists, Nerjus Varnelis scored 31 and grabbed 13 rebounds and Marius Janisius posted 20 points and 12 boards to lead the winners. Marius Prekevicius had 23 points as one of seven scorers in double figures for Siauliai. Antonio Grant added 19 points, Mantas Ruikis 17, Jose Olivero 16, Tomas Rinkevicius 15, Gedimnas Maceina 11 and Aurimas Kieza scored 10 and grabbed 9 rebounds. In the other matches, Sakalai took a 74-80 away win over Nevezis, Neptunas downed Aisciai-Atletas 88-71 and Techasas beat Arvi-Suduva 81-75.
