Roger Grimau - AXA FC Barcelona Real Madrid stayed as a solid leader atop the Spanish League standings and gained a two-game edge over everyone else at 16-3 by edging archrivals MMT Estudiantes 84-80 at home behind 16 points each from Louis Bullock and Charles Smith. iurbentia Bilbao Basket is now second at 14-5 while Tau Ceramica, AXA FC Barcelona and DKV Joventut tie for the third place, each with a 13-6 record. AXA FC Barcelona beat archrivals DKV Joventut 84-75 at home in a highlu-anticipated derby on Saturday. Roger Grimau paced the winners with 23 points on 9-for-10 two-pointers. Gianluca Basile had 14 while Rudy Fernandez led Joventut with 27 points. Meanwhile, Tau thrashed Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 98-61 at home on Sunday. Sergi Vidal led the winners with 20 points on 4-for-5 three-pointers. Unicaja held off a late rally to beat Polaris World CB Murcia 70-73 with 24 points from Jiri Welsch while Akasvayu Girona showed its power by by thrashing Pamesa Valencia 70-91 on the road on Sunday. Fernando San Emeterio paced the winners with 23 points, Branko Cvetkovic added 19 while Marc Gasol posted a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. Kalise Gran Canaria dropped dropped to 8-11 due to a 83-81 road loss against Grupo Begar Leon. In other games, ViveMenorca downed Grupo Capitol Valladolid 101-93, C.B. Granada thrashed iurbentia Bilbao Basket 97-81 while Cajasol need overtime to edge Ricoh Manresa 102-96 behind 27 points from Andres Miso.

Madrid trailed 21-24 early in the second quarter but a 12-1 run that Kerem Tunceri capped with a triple gave Madrid the lead for good, 34-25. The hosts boosted their margin to 53-37 at halftime behind an outstanding Smith. Estudiantes got within 77-72 but Bullock followed a basket with a triple and soon added free throws to seal the outcome. AXA FC Barcelona showed its power by beating archrivals DKV Joventut 84-75 at home on Saturday. Both teams tie for the third place in the standings, each with a 13-6 record. Grimau paced the winners with 23 points on 9-for-10 two-pointers. Basile had 14, Jaka Lakovic added 13, Ersan Ilyasova 12 and Denis Marconato 11 for Barcelona. Fernandez had 27 points for Joventut while Ricky Rubio added 13. A 12-0 run that Grimau capped with a layup allowed Barcelona to get a 32-23 lead midway through the second quarter. Basile, Ilyasova and Marconato allowed the hosts to extend their margin to 49-37 at halftime. Joventut only allowed 4 points in the third quarter, however, while three-pointers by Lubos Barton and Demond Mallet brought the guests within 53-49 after 30 minutes. Barcelona regained its momentum in the fourth quarter, as Basile, Grimau and Ilyasova shined to make the hosts add a major win. Tau also improved to 13-6 by thrashing Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 98-61 at home on Sunday. Vidal led the winners with 20 points on 4-for-5 three-pointers. Igor Rakocevic added 17, Tiago Splitter had 16, Zoran Planinic 12 while Mirza Teletovic and Simas Jasaitis each got 10 points in an easy win for Tau, that led 55-30 at halftime and did not find any troubles to add another home win.

Akasvayu Girona improved to 10-9 by thrashing Pamesa Valencia 70-91 on the road on Sunday. Fernando San Emeterio paced the winners with 23 points and just one missed shot. Branko Cvetkovic added 19, Marc Gasol posted a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds while Ivan Radenovic had 14 points for Akasvayu. Ruben Douglas had 14 points, Albert Oliver added 11 and Alex Urtasun 10. A driving layup by San Emeterio allowed Akasvayu to get a 34-40 halftime margin. Gasol, Erik Daniels and a three-pointer by Victor Sada broke the game open, 39-57, midway through the third quarter. Akasvayu extended its lead to 59-83 behind an outstanding Cvetkovic and cruised to a well-deserved win. Kalise Gran Canaria dropped dropped to 8-11 due to a 83-81 road loss against Grupo Begar Leon. Javier Bulfoni paced the winners with 29 points. Sergio Perez had 19 points for Gran Canaria, Carl English added 17 and Victor Baldo 14 for Gran Canaria, that trailed 74-66 with less than 4 minutes to go. Perez stepped up to bring Gran Canaria back in the game. Back-to-back triples by Baldo and free throws by Perez tied the game, 81-81, with 11 seconds to go. Txemi Urtasun had the game-winning basket for Leon. Unicaja improved to 11-8 by edging Polaris World CB Murcia 70-73 on the road on Sunday. Welsch led the way for Unicaja with 24 points while Marcus Haislip added 12. A basket by Carlos Cabezas gave Unicaja a 63-70 lead with less than 3 minutes remaining. Murcia managed to tie the game at 70-70 but free throws by Welsch and Melvin Sanders sealed the outcome down the stretch.
