Greek League, Regular Season, Game 14: January 26-27, 2008
Vasilis Spanoulis - Panathinaikos Olympiacos’s 81-80 defeat to PAOK in Thessaloniki was the biggest news in Greek League Matchday 14. The Reds suffered their second loss of the season so far as Lynn Greer lost the ball and the opportunity to either force overtime or give the guests the win with 14 seconds remaining. Nikos Kouvelas was the Paok hero with 21 points. Meanwhile Panathinaikos rolled for its 14th win in as many games by easily crashing AGO Rethymnon 74-89 in Crete with Vassilis Spanoulis and Mike Batiste netting 20 points apiece. Panathinaikos and Olympiacos face each other at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in two weeks, right after the All-Star break. Aris TT Bank picked up its ninth consecutive win, this time beating Olympiada Patras 75-66 at home as Bracey Wright posted 15 points, while Dwayne Jefferson gunned 27 for the visitors. Panionios did not face the slightest problem to top Kolossos Rhodes 89-65 as Giannis Georgalis led six scorers in double figures with 14 points. Maroussi scored a 73-75 road win over Panellinios as Costas Haralambidis bagged 26 points and Nikos Boudouris scored the winning layup at the buzzer. The hosts will appeal claiming that the last basket was made after the buzzer had sounded. Anthony Grundy scored 17 points in defeat. In other games, AEK beat Egaleo 81-70 behind Christos Tapoutos’s huge performance of 24 points and 16 rebounds, while AE Larissa grabbed a 75-62 win over Olympia as Tadas Klimavicius and David Teague shared 14 points.

PAOK dictated the tempo in the big game in Thessaloniki Olympiacos building a 50-35 difference halfway the third period. Olympiacos reacted and took the lead 63-65 thanks to Marc Jackson’s inside dominance and a basket-plus-foul by Panagiotis Vassilopoulos. However, Vassilopoulos missed a critical three-pointer and Lynn Greer lost the possession down the stretch to allow PAOK celebrate its fifth win in the last six games. Nikos Kouvelas scored 21 points for PAOK, as many as he had scored in the 13 previous league games. Kouvelas also grabbed 7 boards, while Mamadou Diarra posted 16 points and 7 rebounds, Dimitris Verginis had 14 points on 9-of-9 from the free-throw line, including 4 in the last minute, Ibrahim Kutluay added 10 points and Dimitris Haritopoulos contributed 7 points and 10 boards. Jackson finished the game with a season-high 33 points and 10 boards. Greer had 25 points and Vasilopoulos 12.

Panathinaikos recorded its 400th career win since the 1986-87 season when the Greek League A1 category was established to become the first team to accomplish that. AGO Rethymnon could not cause trouble for the reigning Greek and Euroleague champs; Vassilis Spanoulis posted 20 points on 4 triples, Mike Batiste added another 20 points, while Sani Becirovic had 10 points. David Young netted 21 and Ian Vouyoukas posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in defeat. Aris TT Bank started the game against Olympiada Patras with a 24-8 run on the way to an easy 75-66 win. Bracey Wright scored 15 points, Darius Washington and Hanno Mottola had 12 each and Dimitris Tsaldaris added 10. Dwayne Jefferson scored 27 points for the guests.
