Italian League, Regular Season, Game 21: January 26-27, 2008
Lionel Chalmers - Benetton Tamoil Montepaschi Siena bounced back from its recent losses in the Italian League and improved to 19-2 atop the standings by edging Upim Bologna 75-72 at home on Sunday. Terrell McIntyre led the winners with 16 points, while Ben Eze added 14 for the defending champs. Lottomatica Roma is tied for the second spot at 14-7 after downing Angelico Biella 94-80 at home on Saturday. David Hawkins paced the winners with 19 points, while Allan Ray added 18 in an easy home win for Lottomatica. La Fortezza Bologna improved to 9-12 by edging Tisettanta Cantu 75-69 at home on Sunday morning behind 20 points and 12 rebounds from Guilherme Giovannoni. Meanwhile, Benetton Treviso did not have much trouble to thrash Pierrel Capo d'Orlando 107-79 in Treviso. Lionel Chalmers had 24 points on 5-for-6 three-point shooting for Benetton. Armani Jeans Milano destroyed Scavolini Pesaro 96-61 in Sunday’s late game as Danilo Gallinari netted 20 points. In other games, Air Avellino thrashed Snaidero Udine 67-89, Premiata Montegranaro downed Legea Scafati 93-77, Solsonica Rieti topped Cimberio Varese 83-82 in double overtime while Eldo Napoli defeated Siviglia Wear Teramo 88-66.

Montepaschi Siena broke its two-game losing streak by edging Upim Bologna 75-72 at home on Sunday. McIntyre led the winners with 16 points. Eze added 14, Marco Carrareto 11, Romain Sato 10 and Shaun Stonerook pulled down 11 rebounds for Montepaschi. Joseph Forte had 22 points against his former team for Upim, while James Thomas added 14 for the guests, who trailed 29-15 midway through the second quarter. Thomas and Dante Calabria brought Fortitudo within 40-34 at halftime. Thomas dunked it to complete the guests' comeback, 55-56, with eight minutes to go. The game turned into a thriller when Forte stroke from downtown for a 71-72 Upim edge with a minute remaining. Eze and Bootsy Thornton stepped up with consecutive layups and Forte missed a three-point shot in the final seconds, leaving the win with the hosts. Lottomatica Roma stayed tied for second place at 14-7 after downing Angelico Biella 94-80 at home on Saturday. Hawkins paced the winners with 19 points. Ray added 18, Roko-Leni Ukic had 15 and Gregor Fucka 10 for Lottomatica. Hawkins had 9 points in the first quarter to lead Lottomatica to a 25-17 lead after 10 minutes. Three-pointer by Hawkins, Roberto Gabini and Ioannis Gkagkalouidis made it a 20-point game, 42-22, and a final basket by Rodrigo De La Fuente allowed Roma to keep that margin at the break, 55-35. Nothing changed in the second half, as Lottomatica sealed the outcome long before the final buzzer.

La Fortezza Bologna improved to 9-12 by edging Tisettanta Cantu 75-69 at home on Sunday morning. Giovannoni led the winners with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Alan Anderson added 19 points while Travis Best had 13 for Virtus. Best, Giovannoni and an unstoppable Roberto Chiacig helped Virtus to take a 43-29 halftime margin. Cantu did not surrender, however, and regained the lead at 55-58 midway through the fourth quarter. Cantu got its last lead at 67-68, before Luca Garri and Anderson fueled a 8-1 run that helped Virtus to win the game. Benetton also moved up to 9-12 by thrashing Pierrel Capo d'Orlando 107-79 in Treviso on Sunday. Chalmers led the winners with 24 points on 5-for-6 three-point shooting. John Lucas added 17 points, Reece Gaines had 14 and Guiliano Maresca 12 in an easy home win for Benetton, which led 52-42 at halftime and used a rain of three-pointers to boost its margin up to 82-58 after 30 minutes, enough to seal the outcome.

Armani Jeans Milano raised its record to 10-11 by downing Scavolini Pesaro 96-61 on Sunday night. Gallinari led the way with 20 points while five other players scored in double figures for the winners: Casey Shaw had 14 points with a perfect 6-for-6 two point shooting, Mindaugas Katelynas and Travis Watson netted 13 apiece, Melvin Booker added 12 with 8 assists and Ansu Sesay 11. Milano sparked a 14-2 run early in the second quarter to take a comfortable 34-25 margin. Dusan Vukcevic from downtown beat the halftime buzzer to make it 38-29. Three consecutive dunks by Travis Watson and duo the of Gallinari Booker hitting downtown extended the cushion to 75-50 and with two minutes to go to an incredible 96-59. Michael Hicks had 16 for Scavolini and Rasheed Brokenborough 10.
