Adriatic League, Game 20: February 2-3, 2008

The 20th round of the Adriatic League featured plenty of interesting showdowns like every week. In one of them, Partizan Igokea remaind at the top spot of the standings by surviving BC Hemofarm Stada at home by 89-86 thanks to 17 points by Novica Velickovic, who scored the last two free throws of the game and saw how Rawle Marshall missed the last three that could have given Hemofarm the chance to survive in overtime. BC FMP had an easy home win over Helios Domzale by 82-69 behind 16 points apiece by Zoran Erceg and Mladen Jeremic. KK Zadar was a road winner on Saturday at Zagreb by 80-90 in a Croatian duel. Todor Gecevski had 23 points for the winners. Red Star also won on the road by 10 points, 73-83, against KK Split thanks to 25 points by Tadija Dragicevic. Cibona survived on the road against Siroki by 81-83 thanks to 17 points apiece by Sam Hoskin and Chris Warren and finally, Union Olimpija defeated KK Buducnost at home by 72-68 behind 14 points by Marko Milic.
In the duel between the leader and the team in fourth place, Partizan Igokea defeated BC Hemofarm Stada at home by 89-86. Novica Velickovic led the winners with 17 points, Uros Tripkovic and Nikola Pekovic had 15 apiece and Petar Bozic added 12 for the winners. For Hemofarm, Nebojsa Joksimovic had 19 points and Rawle Marshall and Milivoje Bozovic had 18 each. The game remained close throughout the 40 minutes. After 10 minutes Partizan was leading by 18-13, but Hemofarm came back in the second period for a 39-40 halftime score. Partizan reacted a little in the third quarter and managed to build a 4-point lead entering the last an decisive period. Entering the last minute, a bomb from downtown by Milan Macvan made it 83-82 and his layup also made it 85-84 seconds later. The foul carrousel arrived and with Partizan having the upper hand, the hosts didn't miss any of the four attempts from the line as Velickovic made it 89-86 with seconds to go, but Marshall missed the triple that would have sent the game into OT. In another duel, BC FMP got rid of Helios Domzale at home by 82-69. Mladen Jeremic and Zoran Erceg had 16 points each for the hosts, Dragan Labovic added 13 and Bojan Krstovic had 10. The first half was especially tough for FMP who despite winning the first quarter, it trailed at the break by 29-35 thanks to an outstanding second quarter by Helios. However, things changed in the second half. FMP was more accurate in offense and after taking back the control of the game, the hosts blasted Helios 28-16 in the last period for the final win.
KK Zadar was one of the road warriors this weekend as it triumphed in Zagreb by 80-90. Todor Gecevski led the winners with 23 points, Juby Johnson added 20, Rok Stipcevic had 13 and Pankracije Barac posted 10. Zadar took off in the first quarter and after 10 minutes the guests dominated by 9, 17-26. From that point on, Zadar took its grip on the game and kept pushing Zagreb to the limit. After two more successful quarters, the guests dominated by 21 points after 30 minutes, 57-78. With the game broken open, Zadar relaxed an Zagreb attempted for an almost impossible comeback, and impossible it proved even though the hosts managed to win the last period by 23-12 allowing Zadar to breathe when the final buzzer rang. Red Star was another road winner by 10 points as it defeated Split in Croatia by 73-83. Tadija Dragicevic was the best man for the winners with 25 points, Mirko Kovac added 19, Omar Cook 16 and Nenad Misanovic, 11. After a close first half that ended with the hosts ahead by 39-36, Red Star reacted and stormed on court taking the third period by a clear 11-27. With a comfortable cushion to face the last quarter, Red Star played to maintain the lead that at the end of the game was trimmed down to 10 points.
Cibona survived also on the road by 81-83 at Siroki as Sam Hoskin scored the final free throw and missed another and in the last play, Siroki's Sinisa Stemberger missed the crucial three that would have given the hosts the win. Hoskin and Chris Warren led the winners with 17 points each, Vedran Vukusic posted 16 and Vedran Princ helped with 11. Luksa Andric scored a free throw to get to the end of the third quarter with a 66-61 Siroki lead. But the last period started with a 0-10 Cibona run capped by Hoskin's dunk that soon made it 66-71 for the guests. Siroki reacted soon and they managed to come within 73-74 after Same Spralja free throws in minute 37, and then Sharif Fajardo tied it for the hosts, 77-77. Five straight points by Warren, including a triple, made it 78-82 for Cibona but Spralja hit his own bomb to make it 81-82 with seconds to go. Hoskin went to the line and only scored one of the two attempts but Stemberger missed a final three that would have given the win to Siroki. A duel between Union Olimpija and Buducnost in Ljubljana fell on the hosts' side by 72-68. Marko Milic had 14 points for Olimpija, Ron Taylor added 13 and Goran Dragic had 12 for Olimpija. Ivan Maras was the best man for Buducnost with 16 points while Vladimir Micov and Nemanja Gordic had 14 each. The game had two completely different faces. In the first half, Union Olimpija dominated at ease as its lead got bigger and bigger. By the halftime break the Ljubljana team was ahead by 36-22. However, things turned around in the third period as a 2-7 run to start put Buducnost back in business, and another 0-5 made it 42-38 in minute 26 and Micov's last three put a 51-48 after 30 minutes. The last quarter remained close until the end, when Gordic put Buducnost ahead, 64-67. Milic free throws and Taylor's dunk put Olimpija back on track, 68-67 and finally, four free throws by Dragic and Mirza Begic sealed the deal for Olimpija. In the remaining game of the weekend, Vojvodina succeeded at home against Geoplin Slovan by 80-64 behind 20 points by Ivan Ivanovic.
