Prokom Trefl Sopot and Anwil Wlocławek both lost away games on Wednesday, allowing PGE Turow Zgorzelec to catch them for first place in the Polish League. Defending champion Prokom went down 89-79 at Basket Kwidzyn, while Anwil lost at Asco Slask Wroclaw 69-64, with both teams dropping to 13-4 in the standings. Eric Barkley led Kwidzyn with 17 points and 5 assists and veteran Mike Ansley added 14. Wroclaw got 17 points and 9 rebounds from Jared Homan to earn its win. Meanwhile Turow topped Polpak Swiecie 72-78 to join the first-place party behind David Logan’s 26 points. AZS Koszalin hit 11 triples in the first half of its game against Popharma en route to a 93-75 victory. DJ Thomson made 5 three-pointers to lead six Koszalin scorers in double figures with 17 points. Nate Richardson hit 6 triples on his way to 23 points for Polonia Warsaw in a 97-86 home decision over Gornik Walbrzych. And Mantas Cesnauskis scored 18 points to lead six Energa Czarni Slupsk players in double figures in an 80-67 home win over Kotwica Kolobrzeg. Rafal Bigus finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists for Kotwica.
Defending champion Prokom Trefl Sopot went down 89-79 at Basket Kwidzyn, which was even more surprising due to the fact that the hosts top player, Mike King, had just left the team to sign in Greece. However Kwidzyn overcame his absence through defense. Prokom led only in the first quarter and after that, 41-year-old Mike Ansley pushed Kwidzyn ahead and the hosts never looked back. Eric Barkley led the winners with 17 points and 5 assists, while Ansley added 14. Donatas Slanina led all scorers with 23 points including 5 triples, Pape Sow added 17 points and Milan Gurovic finished with 11.
Asco Slask beat Anwil 69-64 thanks to a great defensive performance in the second quarter, when the guests were limited to just 4 points. Slask built a 9-points halftime lead and was up by as many as 15 in the third quarter. Anwil tried to come back and closed the gap to 5 points as Slask missed six consecutive free throws, but hosts were able to hold on. Jared Homan paced the winners with 17 points and 9 rebounds, while Rashid Atkins, Torrel Martin and Oliver Stevic finished with 10 each. Andrzej Pluta had 17 and Alan Daniels 14 for Anwil. Turow topped Polpak Swiecie 72-78 to join the first-place party. Turow trailed by 9 in the third quarter, but opened the fourth one with a 5-19 run and took the lead for good. David Logan finished with 26 points, Thomas Kelati added 17 – that duo combined for 9 triples – and Marko Scekic finished with 16 points. Bobby Dixon and Erick Hicks both finished with 23 for Polpak.
