Turkish League, Regular Season, Game 20: February 16-17, 2008

Banvit of Bandirma blasted recent Turkish cup winners Turk Telekom and Pinar Karsiyaka edged Galatasaray Cafe Crown, leaving Efes Pilsen and Besiktas Cola Turka as the co-leaders of the Turkish League after 20 games. Efes destroyed Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 106-63 to improve to 15-5 as Loren Woods shined, leading six Efes scorers in double figures with 17 points, 19 rebounds and 5 assists. Besiktas struggled, but beat Oyak Renault of Bursa 78-68 thanks to another extraordinary performance from Preston Shumpert, who tallied 22 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. In a stunning result, Banvit sent Turk Telekom to one of the worst results in club history, 125-87. The hosts led already 62-31 at halftime of a lopsided affair. Joe Crispin scored 34 points to lead six Bandirma scorers in double digits. Sean Marshall netted a pair of free throws with 8 seconds remaining to lift Pinar Karsiyaka over Galatasaray 75-74 in Izmir. Marshall finished with a game-high 31 points. Meanwhile defending champion Fenerbahce Ulker climbed into a three-way tie for third place after avenging an early-season loss to Alpella with an 83-61 victory. Omer Onan led Fener with 17 points. In other games, CASA TED Kolejliler needed overtime to beat Kepez Belediye 83-79 as Ozgur Adiguzel played over 44 minutes and scored 15 points, Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi bested Darussafaka 88-83 thanks to 26 points and 13 rebounds from Eddy Fobbs and Antalya Buyuksehir Belediyesi beat TT Net Beykoz 97-65.
Efes Pilsen trashed Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 106-63 to earn a share of first place alongside Besiktas ColaTurka. Efes started the game with a 5-2 lead, but a 0-9 spurt from the visitors with Deshon Farley, Umut Yenice and Kevin Braswell scoring put Selcuk ahead. However Efes responded through Kerem Gonlum and Rashad Wright in time to finish the period up 19-18. Ermal Kuqo and Kenny Gregory stood up in the second quarter and Efes controlled the most of this period with good defence to build a 50-30 halftime lead. Loren Woods, Gregory and Kuqo extend the Efes lead to 85-43 at the end of the third quarter and then cruised through the last 10 minutes for a remarkable win. Kuqo lead Efes with 20 points and 5 rebounds, Woods had 17 points, 19 rebounds and 5 assists, Gonlum ended with 14 points plus 8 rebounds, Gregory and Wright scored 13 each, Ender Arslan scored 10 and dished 10 assists and Drew Nicholas scored 9 and dished 7 assists for Efes. Hazer Avci and Yenice scored 19 each for Mutlu Aku Selcuk University.
Fenerbahce Ulker avenged a previous loss to Alpella with an 83-61 victory. Fener got off to a surprising 16-4 start as Omer Onan and Oguz Savas scored at will to take control early. The lead stayed throughout the half, which ended at 46-34. Alpella tried to come back with Damien Kinloch and James Hughes pushing hard, but the home side extended the lead to 60-44 at the end of the third period and won easily. Onan lead Fener with 17 points, Savas and Emir Preldzic scored 12 points each and Omer Asik scored 7 points, but grabbed 11 boards for Fener. Marshall Strickland scored 13 points, Kinloch had 12 points plus 13 rebounds and Hughes added 10 points for Alpella.
Besiktas Cola Turka struggled, but beat Oyak Renault of Bursa 78-68 thanks to another extraordinary performance from Preston Shumpert. Besiktas led 22-17 after 10 minutes, but then trailed 40-41 at halftime. Renault ruled the game in the third period too, using Morwell Randle and Ozgur Biyik very well inside, while Evren Buker and Alper Saruhan helped out from downtown to allow the visitors a 56-59 advantage at the end of the third period. Shumpert took the responsibility for Besiktas in the last quarter. The forward broke the balance with his skillfull drives and Sandro Nicevic helped him with the scoring, too. Besiktas took the lead with a Nicevic layup midway through the period and didn’t let it go until the end, finally extending the gap to 10 points. Shumpert scored 22 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 5 assists. Nicevic added 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Erkan Veyseloglu added 14 and Predrag Drobnjak 11 for Besiktas. Evren Buker led Renault with 19 points, Randle had 15 and Biyik 11 for the Bursa side.
Banvit of Bandirma blasted recent Turkish cup winners Turk Telekom 125-87 in one of the most astonishing results of the season. The 38-points defeat is one of the worst results in Turk Telekom history. Banvit made a fast start to the game, putting Donnell Harvey and Joe Crispin in charge of an 11-2 burst in the first four minutes. The lead stood at 25-15 at the end of the first period. Caner Topaloglu, Kenny Adeleke and Umit Sonkol extended the lead to 19 points early in the second period as Inanc Koc joined the others in the mission of destroying Telekom as the home team doubled the score to 62-31 at halftime. It seemed that only Muratcan Guler and Tutku Acik fought for Turk Telekom to stay in the game and Haluk Yildirim’s back-to-back three-pointers cut the difference to 17 points in the third quarter, but Banvit went into the last quarter ahead 87-67 ahead. Crispin and Adeleke were in the mood to score and Topaloglu’s layup would make the score 109-77. But the home team didn’t stop scoring as they kept on extending the lead and won the game 125-87. Crispin scored 34 points to lead six Bandirma scorers in double digits. Yunus Cankaya scored 20, Adeleke had 18, Topaloglu finished with 17, Koc 14 and Harvey 11 points. Acik led Telekom with 19 points, Guler made 15, Chris Lang and Erwin Dudley nailed 13 each and Khalik El Amin scored 10 points for Telekom.
Galatasaray Cafe Crown lost to Pinar Karsiyaka 75-74 in Izmir. Despite Galatasaray leading the first quarter 15-24 through Murat Kaya and Huseyin Besok’s points, Karsiyaka never let go and fought steady until the end. The Izmir side cut the difference to 33-38 at halftime and got close to tying the game in the third quarter on Quinton Hosley and Sean Marshall points, but Galatasaray went into the last quarter up 55-59 ahead, despite losing Charles Gaines to disqualification. The Hosley/Marshall duo worked well in the last quarter as the home team entered the last minute 73-64 ahead. But 2 three-pointers by Kaya and another triple from Robert Hite tied the game at 73-73 with 28 second to go. Hite one of two free throws, but Marshall scored 2 free throws with 8 seconds remaining to seal the victory as Galatasaray wasn’t able to answer. Hosley scored 24 points and grabbed 15 boards, and Marshall made 31 points plus 7 rebounds for Karsiyaka. Galatasaray got 17 points from Peker and 13 points from Hite. Cenk Akyol and Gaines scored 11 each.
