Spanish League, Game 21: February 16-17, 2008
Alex Acker - AXA FC Barcelona Real Madrid keeps leading the Spanish League standings with a 17-4 record, with a two-game advantage over Tau Ceramica, DKV Joventut, AXA FC Barcelona and iurbentia Bilbao Basket, that tie for the second spot at 15-6. Madrid thrashed Pamesa Valencia 74-97 on the road on Sunday morning. Charles Smith led the winners with 18 points. Felipe Reyes had 15 while Ruben Douglas led Pamesa with 23 points. AXA FCB had more troubles to down Grupo Capitol Valladolid 69-62 at home on Sunday behind 24 points from Alex Acker. Tau Ceramica kept tying for second place by thrashing Akasvayu Girona 111-86 in Vitoria on Saturday. Pete Mickeal led the winners with 23 points while Pablo Prigioni added 20 on 7-for-7 two-pointers. Fernando San Emeterio had 23 points to lead Akasvayu. Meanwhile, DKV Joventut also moved up to 15-6 by overwhelming Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 89-63 in Badalona on Saturday behind 18 points from Rudy Fernandez. Unicaja is now sixth at 13-8 by thrashing MMT Estudiantes 87-71 in Malaga on Sunday with 23 points from Marcus Haislip and 22 on 5-for-5 three-pointers from Davor Kus. Meanwhile, Kalise Gran Canaria improved to 10-11 by edging Cajasol 89-98 in Seville on Sunday to get its first Spanish League road win this season - and also its first win in San Pablo Arena since 1990. In other games, ViveMenorca edged Ricoh Manresa 63-62 on a buzzer-beating triple by Marino Bazdaric, Grupo Begar Leon upset CB Granada 87-92 while Bilbao Basket downed Polaris World CB Murcia 71-60.

Real Madrid showed its power and improved to 17-4 to keep leading the standings by thrashing Pamesa Valencia 74-97 on the road on Sunday morning. Smith led the winners with 18 points. Reyes had 15, Axel Hervelle added 14, Louis Bullock got 13 while Alex Mumbru scored 10 points for Madrid. Douglas had 23 points for Pamesa, Victor Claver added 11 and Shammond Williams 10. Smith ad Mumbru led Madrid to a 18-26 lead after 10 minutes and the guests improved their margin to 29-45 on consecutive triples by Iker Iturbe. Three-pointers by Williams, Douglas and Claver brought Pamesa back to life, 48-49, after the break. Kerem Tunceri rescued his team with 8 quick points while Hervelle and Smith stepped up to restore a 59-74 Madrid lead after 30 minutes. A three-pointer by Bullock sealed the outcome, 69-89, long before the final buzzer. AXA FC Barcelona improved to 15-6 and ties for second place by edging Grupo Capitol Valladolid 69-62 at home on Sunday. Acker led the winners with 24 points while Mario Kasun added 17 for Barcelona, that led 52-51 after 30 minutes. Barcelona improved its defense while Acker, Kasun and Pepe Sanchez sealed the outcome, 67-56, in the final 2 minutes. Kalise Gran Canaria improved to 10-11 by edging Cajasol 89-98 in Sevilla on Sunday. Marcus Norris paced the winners with 20 points. Carl English added 19, Nick Caner-Medley and Sitapha Savane each had 13 while Roberto Guerra got 12 for Gran Canaria, that led 38-44 at halftime and improved its margin to 42-55 midway through the third quarter. Cajasol got within 79-84 with 2 minutes to go but Norris and Guerra combined for all points in a 0-6 run that sealed the outcome.

Tau Ceramica improved to 15-6 and joined the four-way tie for the second place in the standings by thrashing Akasvayu Girona 111-86 in Vitoria on Saturday. Mickeal led the winners with 23 points. Prigioni added 20 on 7-for-7 two-pointers, Zoran Planinic had 14 and 7 assists, Tiago Splitter scored 13 points while Sergi Vidal got 10 for Tau, that made 13-for-18 three-pointers. San Emeterio had 23 points to lead Akasvayu, Marc Gasol added 19, Arriel McDonald 15 and Erik Daniels 13. Tau led 74-71 after 32 minutes but simply took over in the final 8 minutes, in which the hosts scored 37 points. Gabe Mouneke and an unstoppable Mickeal allowed Tau to seal the outcome long before the final buzzer. DKV Joventut also moved up to 15-6 by overwhelming Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 89-63 in Badalona on Saturday. Fernandez paced the winners with 18 points. Jerome Moiso added 16, Demond Mallet had 13, Pau Ribas got 11 and Ferran Laviña 10 in an easy home win for Joventut, that led 43-35 at halftime and boosted its margin to 66-49 behind an unstoppable Ribas to seal the outcome midway through the fourth quarter. Unicaja is now sixth at 13-8 by thrashing MMT Estudiantes 87-71 in Malaga on Sunday. Haislip paced the winners with 23 points, Kus added 22 on 5-for-5 three-pointers while Daniel Santiago had 21 for Unicaja, that led 44-35 at halftime. An 11-2 run that Haislip capped with a basket gave Unicaja a 59-44 margin midway through the third quarter and the hosts managed to keep a double-digit lead all the way until the final buzzer.
