British League, Regular Season, Game 20: February 15-17, 2008
Tony Dorsey - Guildford Heat The Newcastle Eagles padded their lead atop the British League by pounding the Team Birmingham Panthers on Sunday, while the defending champion Guildford Heat climbed to second place with a pair of wins. Newcastle torched Birmingham 59-104 at the Sport TCAT Arena in Telford to raise its record to 16-3. The visitors put the game away early and led 19-50 by halftime. Charles Smith paced the Eagles with 23 points and Darius Defoe and Steve Leven added 19 points apiece. The Heat advanced to second place with a 14-5 mark by beating Marshall MK Lions 81-87 on Friday and BiG Storage Cheshire Jets 111-91 on Saturday. Against the Lions, the Heat needed a late 0-7 surge to take the lead in the fourth quarter before an Ajou Deng triple preserved the win. Tony Dorsey led all scorers with 28 points, EJ Harrison posted 17 and Mike Martin 15. The next day it was also a close encounter as the Jets trailed by just 2 points early in the fourth quarter. However James Jones hit a three to key a 12-1 run and the Heat soon added 13 unanswered points to take care of business. Danny Gilbert paced the Heat with 31 points, Jones was 6 for 9 from downtown for 22 points plus 9 assists, Harrison scored 15, Martin had 13 and 8 rebounds and Dorsey finished with 10. Jayson Obazuaye and Matt Otten scored 27 points apiece for the Jets. On Sunday, the SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks scored a 77-57 win over PAWS London Capital to join Kularoos Plymouth Raiders in a tie for third place at 14-7. Moritz Wohlers scored 17 points to lead the Rocks. In other games on Saturday, Birmingham bested London 60-64 behind Rob Paternostro’s 16 points, the Raiders topped the Sheffield Sharks 85-73 thanks to Drew Lasker’s 27 points and Worcester Wolves edged Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders 67-66 on James Life’s free throws with 10 seconds remaining.
