Spanish League, Game 22: February 23-24, 2008
Victor Claver - Pamesa Valencia It was a weekend full of a surprises in the Spanish League, but Real Madrid stayed ahead everyone else with a 18-4 record by downing CB Granada 84-93 on the road on Saturday. Louis Bullock paced the winners with 21 points while Felipe Reyes added 16 for Madrid. DKV Joventut is now second at 16-6 by thrashing Grupo Begar Leon 94-75 in Badalona on Saturday. Rudy Fernandez had 23 of his 28 points in the first half to make Joventut get an important win. AXA FC Barcelona dropped to 15-7 due to a 77-69 road loss against Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada. Marko Tomas paced the winners with 19 points. Jaka Lakovic had 16 points for Barcelona. Meanwhile, Tau Ceramica moved down to 15-7 because of a 93-89 road loss against MMT Estudiantes and lost Igor Rakocevic due to a calf injury. Pamesa Valencia rallied from a 13-point deficit in the final 6 minutes to edge Kalise Gran Canaria 80-84 on the road on Sunday behind 24 points from Victor Claver. Akasvayu Girona improved to 12-10 by topping Polaris World CB Murcia 80-66 at home on Sunday with 16 points each from Fernando San Emeterio and Arriel McDonald. An injury-plagued Unicaja dropped to 13-9 because of a 86-80 road loss against ViveMenorca. In other games, Cajasol edged iurbentia Bilbao Basket 75-72 while Grupo Capitol Valladolid topped Ricoh Manresa 90-87 behind 30 points from Bud Eley.

Real Madrid improved to 18-4 and kept leading the standings by downing CB Granada 84-93 on the road on Saturday. Bullock paced the winners with 21 points. Reyes added 16, Charles Smith got 15 while Alex Mumbru and Axel Hervelle each had 14 for Madrid, that trailed 46-41 at halftime. Reyes got Madrid back in the game while three-pointers by Bullock and Hervelle gave the guests a 61-63 after 30 minutes. Mumbru and Bullock shined in the fourth quarter to make Madrid cruise to yet another win. DKV Joventut is now second at 16-6 by thrashing Grupo Begar Leon 94-75 in Badalona on Saturday. Fernandez had 23 points on 5-for-6 triples in the first half to give Joventut a 46-34 lead. Joventut boosted its lead to 74-54 after 30 minutes and never looked back. Lakovic had 16 points for Barcelona, Ersan Ilyasova added 15, Alex Acker had 14 and Roger Grimau 12 for the guests, that trailed 59-45 late in the third quarter. Grimau brought Barcelona within 72-66 with 2 minutes to go but a three-pointer by veteran guard Ferran Lopez sealed the outcome. Tau Ceramica moved down to 15-7 because of a 93-89 road loss against MMT Estudiantes. Sergio Sanchez paced the winners with 19 points. Rakocevic led Tau with 22 points, but did not play in the final 6 minutes due to a calf injury. Sergi Vidal added 18, Tiago Splitter had 16 while Simas Jasaitis and Zoran Planinic each got 10 for the guests. Tau trailed all the way in the final period but Splitter got the guests within 90-88 already in the final period. Free throws by Sanchez allowed Estudiantes to seal a much-needed win.

Pamesa Valencia improved to 13-9 by rallying to beat Kalise Gran Canaria 80-84 on the road on Sunday. Claver paced the winners with 24 points. Fred House added 14, Ruben Garces had 12, Ruben Douglas got 11 and Albert Oliver 10 for Pamesa. Carl English had 23 points for Gran Canaria, that dropped to 10-12. Kornel David added 13 while Nick Caner-Medley got 12 for the hosts, that led 70-57 with 7 minutes to go. Three-pointers by Douglas, Claver, House and Shammond Williams brought Pamesa back to life, igniting a 1-19 run that Claver capped with another basket for a 71-76 lead. English singlehandedly kept Gran Canaria in the game, but free throws by Claver and Oliver sealed the outcome in the final 14 seconds. Akasvayu Girona improved to 12-10 by topping Polaris World CB Murcia 80-66 at home on Sunday. San Emeterio and McDonald led the way for Girona each with 16 points, Marc Gasol posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while Erik Daniels also had 14 points for Akasvayu, that led 37-26 at halftime. Three-pointers by San Emeterio, McDonald and Branko Cvetkovic broke the game open, 60-41, late in the third quarter, and Murcia never recovered. Unicaja dropped to 13-9 because of a 86-80 road loss against ViveMenorca. Mario Stojic led the winners with 18 points. Carlos Jimenez had 20 points for Unicaja while German Gabriel added 12 for the guests, who travelled without Carlos Cabezas and Berni Rodriguez while Marcus Haislip and Boniface Ndong saw limited playing time due to respective physical problems. Unicaja trailed 61-59 after 30 minutes but Stojic and Paul Shirley took over in the final period to make ViveMenorca cruise to a well-deserved win.
