Belgian League, Regular Season, Game 22: February 22-24, 2008
Justin Hamilton - Spirou BasketSpirou Basket Charleroi edged defending champion Telindus Oostende 65-66 to keep things wild atop the Belgian League standings. The result leaves four teams with 15 wins – Charleroi, Dexia Mons-Hainaut, Oostende and Basket Bree. However two of those teams, Oostende and Bree, have a game at hand against fifth place Belgacom Liege Basket, which has 14 wins. In the weekend’s feature game, Charleroi won a back-and-forth encounter after the hosts scored 9 unanswered points down the stretch to take a 1-point lead, Michael Jordan’s layup in the final minute gave Spirou back the elad and Oostende was unable to score on its remaining possessions. Wes Wilkinson finished with 16 points to pace the winners. Mons took a double-digit lead already in the first period en route to a 78-56 win over Optima Gent as George Evans led the way with 15. Bree pulled away with a 26-12 third period to beat Antwerp Diamond Giants 99-82. Doron Perkins shined with 25 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals and Dor Fisher posted 21 points and 16 boards for Bree, while David Toya paced Antwerp with 16, Ian Hanavan added 15 and Ubaka Ayinde 13. Liege kept close to the pack after besting Spotter Leuven 82-65 thanks to Larry Owens’s season-high 23 points and Generali Okapi Aalstar defeated VOO Verviers-Pepinster 86-78 in overtime behind 21 points and 13 rebounds from Damian Cantrell.

Spirou Basket Charleroi edged defending champion Telindus Oostende 65-66 on Saturday. Michael Jordan’s layup in the final minute gave Spirou the lead and Oostende players missed three times on the remaining possessions. The hosts looked strong in the early going as Chuck Davis dunked twice in a 12-0 run that helped Oostende to an 18-13 lead after 10 minutes. Chris McCray made it 27-17 with a triple early in the second, but some strong minutes from Andre Riddick kept the visitors alive at 36-32 at the halftime break. Wes Wilkinson’s three-point play during a 4-19 charge completed the comeback in the third quarter as the visitors took a double-digit lead. Down 56-64 with less than five minutes remaining, Oostende looked dead in the water, however 9 unanswered points capped by a pair of Titus Ivory free throws with a minute to go restored the hosts’ lead, but it wouldn’t be for long as Jordan put Spirou on top once more and Oostende came up short on its last shots. Wilkinson finished with 16 points to pace the winners, Justin Hamilton scored 13 and dished 6 assists and Tremmell Darden added 10 points. Veselin Petrovic paced Oostende with 14 and Davis and Ivory added 9 points apiece.
