German League, Regular Season, Game 22: March 1-2, 2008
|
A pair of ULEB Cup teams remain neck-and-neck atop the German League while another from the Euroleague made a major move toward joining them over the weekend. Artland Dragons remained ahead of the pack with an 18-4 record enhanced by its 74-79 road win at 10th-placed Bremerhaven as Leon Rodgers and Lamont McIntosh poured in 19 points each. Meanwhile, Patrick Femerling tipped in an offensive rebound before the buzzer to give Alba Berlin a 78-80 come-from-behind road win at Koln 99ers. Julius Jenkins led the way with 21 points for Alba, which has played one more game than Artland and has an 18-5 record. Brose Baskets Bamberg moved up to fourth place when it swamped visiting Bonn, the team that had been above it, by 79-50 as Dwayne Mitchell had 15 points for the winners. Bayer Leverkusen outlasted Deutsche Bank Skyliners 86-79 at home to hold onto third place thanks to Nate Fox's 21 points and 11 rebounds. Other results included host Oldenburg defeating Braunschweig 80-67 to forge a tie between them for eighth place. The same happened at 12th place, where Goottingen got the best of host Ulm in a 79-89 decision. Lower down the table,Trier beat Geissen 69-61, while Digibu Baskets topped Tubingen 89-56.
Artland got its work done early at Bremerhaven, jumping to a 13-25 lead after one quarter and then using big leads to stay in charge the rest of the way. Artland withstood better three-point shooting by Bremerhaven by going 18-for-21 on free throws to hold off a late comeback attempt by the hosts. Chad Prewitt joined Rodgers and McIntosh in double digits with 10 points, while Earl Rowland pulled 10 rebounds for teh winners. Matt Haryasz had 15 points and 12 rebounders for Bremerhaven. Alba had a lot of catching up to do in Cologne, where the 99ers rallied behind newcomer Brian Greene to leads as high as 14 points in the third quarter. Jenkins led Alba's long climb back, until Femerling put back Alesandar Rasic's miss on a late drive to decide the game and keep the Berliners along in second place. For Alba, great scoring help off the bench came from Goran Nikolic and Immanuel McElroy, who had 14 and 11 points, respectively. Greene finished with 28 for Koln.
Bamberg had no trouble jumping into fourth place by limiting Bonn to just 27 points in the first three quarters, which ended 56-27. That defense was buoyed by 12-for-23 three-point shooting in which six different Bamberg players struck from downtown. Mitchell was joined in the scoring by Darren Fenn and Steffen Hamann with 12 points each, while Robert Garrett and Ademola Okujlaja had 9 apiece. EnBW Ludwigsburg took advantage of a visit to last-place Jena to take home a 69-71 road win in comeback fashion. Down 11 points entering the final quarter, Ludwigsburg rallied behind the scoring of Ronald Ross to win in the final minute. Ross finished with 21 points for the winners, while Alexander Seggelke had 17 for Jena. Meanwhile, Skyliners fell to third-place Leverkusen 86-79 on the road despite a huge double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds - not to mention 5 steals - by Ilian Evtimov. A 26-11 second quarter by Leverkusen proved too much for Skyliners to overcome.
