Belgacom Liege Basket climbed back into the race for first place in the Belgian League by downing defending champion Telindus Oostende 79-55 on Friday. Two wins separate the top five teams in the league standings, with Basket Bree (17-6) and Spirou Basket Charleroi (17-7) at the top followed by Oostende (16-7) and Dexia Mons-Hainaut (16-8) and then Liege at 15-7 with games at hand against Bree and Oostende. In Friday’s game, Andre Emmett scored 9 as the hosts opened the fourth quarter with 11 unanswered points to take a commanding 62-47 lead. Oostende would go on to only score 8 points the rest of the way as Liege marched to victory. Emmett finished with 28 points as he reached the 20-point mark for the sixth straight game. Scott Brakebill added 13 for Liege. Sam Van Rossom paced Oostende with 14 and Greg Brunner added 12. Charleroi downed Mons 76-87 on the road behind a 9-21 third quarter. Mons led 45-43 at halftime, but after a Jim Cantamessa triple to open the second half, Wes Wilkinson led Spirou on a 2-17 charge that essentially secure the outcome. Wilkinson and Tremmell Darden led Charleroi with 15 each and Len Matela and Matt Walsh added 12 points apiece. Justin Gray scored 20 off the bench to lead Mons. Bree defeated Optima Gent 95-59, outscoring the visitors 60-26 in the second half. Nick Jacobson led six Bree scorers in double figures with 21. In other games, Generali Okapi Aalstar started out with a 28-7 first period en route to a 90-72 cakewalk over Antwerp Diamond Giants as Matt Lojeski scored 27 and VOO Verviers-Pepinster beat Spotter Leuven 83-66 behind 24 points from Aleksandar Zecevic.
