Spanish League, Game 24: March 7-9, 2008
Shammond Williams - Pamesa Valencia Nothing changed atop the Spanish League standings, as all the major teams registered respective wins this weekend. Real Madrid stayed first at 20-4 by thrashing Unicaja 86-66 in the Spanish capital on Sunday. Charles Smith and Raul Lopez paced the winners each with 15 points. DKV Joventut kept the second place at 18-6 by downing Cajasol 102-82 in Badalona on Friday. Rudy Fernandez led the winners with 18 points in just 15 minutes, as Joventut already led 65-38 at halftime. AXA FC Barcelona and Tau Ceramica tie for third place at 17-7. Barcelona beat Ricoh Manresa 87-70 at home on Sunday behind 17 points from Roger Grimau. Meanwhile, Igor Rakocevic had 20 points to make Tau beat Polaris World CB Murcia 94-83 in Vitoria on Saturday. Akasvayu Girona improved to 13-11 by beating iurbentia Bilbao Basket behind 18 points and 13 rebounds from Marc Gasol. Kalise Gran Canaria moved up to 11-13 by thrashing CB Granada 87-68 at home on Sunday while Pamesa Valencia improved to 15-9 by downing ViveMenorca 64-80 on the road on Saturday with 17 points from Shammond Williams. In other games, Grupo Begar Leon topped Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 92-98 while MMT Estudiantes edged Grupo Capitol Valladolid 74-76 on a buzzer-beating running jumper by Pancho Jasen.

Axel Hervelle added 13 while Louis Bullock had 10 for Real Madrid. Marcus Haislip had 17 points for Unicaja, that dropped to 14-10. Daniel Santiago added 14 while German Gabriel got 12 for the guests, that rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to get within 54-53 late in the third quarter. Madrid did not panic, however, as Alex Mumbru and Lazaros Papadopoulos stepped up to lead a 16-4 run that broke the game open, 70-57. A couple of late triples by Smith allowed Madrid to seal a major win in style. DKV Joventut kept the second place at 18-6 by downing Cajasol 102-82 in Badalona on Friday. Jagla, Barton and Fernandez went on fire, hitting one three-pointer after another. As such, Joventut fired in 11-for-16 triples in the first half and had broken the game open, 65-38, at halftime, enough to sit out its best players for the decisive ULEB Cup game against Khimki. AXA FC Barcelona improved to 17-7 by beating Ricoh Manresa 87-70 at home on Sunday behind 17 points from Grimau. Jaka Lakovic added 14, Gary Neal had 12 and Alex Acker 11 for Barcelona, that led 42-41 early in the third quarter. A 16-1 run in which Lakovic and Acker stroke from downtown broke the game open, 64-46, early in the fourth period.

Tau Ceramica also moved up to 17-7 by downing Polaris World CB Murcia 94-83 in Vitoria on Saturday. A recovered Rakocevic paced the winners with 20 points. Pablo Prigioni added 16 and 7 assists, Simas Jasaitis and Zoran Planinic each had 13 points, Tiago Splitter got 11 and Gabe Mouneke 10 for Tau, that trailed 38-41 at halftime and had a 74-73 edge with less than 6 minutes to go. Tau needed a go-to guy and found two in Mouneke and Prigioni, who buried two triples apiece to seal the outcome, 90-76, with 3 minutes remaining. Akasvayu Girona improved to 13-11 by beating iurbentia Bilbao Basket behind 18 points and 13 rebounds from Marc Gasol. Fernando San Emeterio added 12 points while Arriel McDonald and Erik Daniels each had 11 for Akasvayu, that led 51-50 late in the third quarter. Gasol had 7 points in a 15-4 run that put Girona ahead for good, 66-54, with 3 minutes to go. Kalise Gran Canaria improved to 11-13 by thrashing CB Granada 87-68 at home on Sunday. Carl English led the winners with 16 points. Joel Freeland and Jim Moran each added 12, Sergio Perez had 11 and Roberto Guerra 10 in an easy home win for Gran Canaria, that led 48-34 at halftime and kept full control of the game until the final buzzer. Pamesa Valencia improved to 15-9 by downing ViveMenorca 64-80 on the road on Saturday. Shammond Williams led the way for Pamesa with 17 points, Dejan ilojevic added 14 while Ruben Douglas had 11 for the winners, that led 27-44 at halftime and never looked back.
