The defending champion Guildford Heat ended the first place Newcastle Eagles’ 12-game winning streak and closed the gap from second place Kularoos Plymouth Raiders to one victory in an eventful weekend in the British Basketball League. The big result came on Sunday as the Heat downed the Eagles 86-79, keeping its slim championship hopes alive. Mike Martin scored key points down the stretch as the Heat improved to 19-7 with the win – five victories fewer than the Eagles, but with two games at hand. Martin and E.J. Harrison paced the Heat with 21 points apiece and Tony Dorsey and Danny Gilbert added 19 each in accounting for all but 6 of the team’s points. Lynard Stewart led the Eagles with 21 points and 10 rebounds in defeat. The win was the Heat’s second in the week after topping the Sheffield Sharks 83-92 on Wednesday as Gilbert, Harrison and Dorsey netted 23, 21 and 21 points, respectively. The Eagles stretched their win streak to 12 on Friday when they beat the Raiders 94-78 as Olu Babalola came through with 21 points and Stewart added 20. In other weekend games, the Everton Tigers and BiG Storage Cheshire Jets split a pair of results with the Jets winning 80-103 on Wednesday and the Tigers winning 77-86 on Sunday and PAWS London Capital dropped a pair of decisions, losing 75-74 to Marshall MK Lions on Friday and 62-79 to the Sheffield Sharks on Saturday.
