Portuguese League, Game 20: March 29-30, 2008

Ovarense Aerosoles took the big showdown in the Portuguese League this weekend by topping Porto Ferpinta 69-75 in a netural round in Coimbra on Sunday. Ovarense leads the standings with a 17-3 record and is already the regular season champion while Porto dropped to 16-4 with one game to go before the playoffs. John Waller led the winners with 20 points, Cordell Henry added 13 while Gregory Stempin posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for Ovarense. Nuno Marcal had 21 points for Porto. Fred Gentry allowed Porto to get a 13-6 lead early in the game but Nuno Cortez and Waller brought Ovarense within 16-15 after 10 minutes. Back-to-back baskets by Stempin and Miguel Miranda but Ovarense ahead, 23-27, but an outstanding Marcal led a 12-2 run put make Porto regain the lead, 35-29, right after the break. Waller and Stempin kept Ovarense in the game while a free throw by Graham Brown tied the game, 50-50, after 30 minutes. Elvis Evora had 4 points in an 1-11 run that gave Ovarense a double-digit lead, 51-61, early in the fourth quarter. Porto managed to get within 59-63 but a basket by Waller and free throws by Henry sealed the outcome with 16 seconds to go. CAB Madeira showed its power by downing Vagos Lusavouga Dewalt 86-97 on Saturday. Jose Costa led the winners with 31 points on 15-for-15 free throws while Mario Jorge added 21 for CAB. In other games always in Coimbra, Barreirense edged Casino Figueira Ginasio 82-79 while Belenenses Hyundai Lusifor thrashed Lusitania Angra PM 63-84.
